The final day of Fitbit Compass Expedition #3 with USF Executive Education is over! Our final day included some highlights - we started off with A Panel with Gimena Pena Malcampo, CEO at Pier2Marketing, and Steven Yarger, VP of Membership at Life360, who guided us through a couple of transformational change management success cases - including some of their own! Subsequently, Prof. Kern Peng, Engineering Manager at Intel, led us through Strategic Project Management for Innova...tion. He joined Prof. Tom Maier and Derene Allen for Fitbit groups’ presentations - and provided some feedback and suggestions for them to take back to their journeys. Thank you to all participants and group leaders for visiting us virtually here in Silicon Valley - stay in touch! And thank you to all of our lecturers, company speakers, and panelists for making this a truly engaging virtual learning experience!

Another eventful and inspiring day is over for our participants from Fitbit! Amir Bonakdar, Business Lead for North America for SAP’s AppHaus / Design Thinking practice, kicked us off with a 360-degree overview of the SAP AppHaus, demonstrating how the company leverages Design Thinking principles to develop innovative solutions for their customers. Thanks for an exiciting presentation, Amir! IDEO is probably the company most known for it’s innovative business designs - many k...now that Apple’s first computer mouse was designed by them! We were thrilled to welcome Uvini Lokuge, who is a Senior Business Designer at IDEO, for an exciting presentation on IDEO and it’s principles - thank you! After Amir and Uvini, Prof. Thomas Maier helped Fitbit’s participants work on some of the Design Thinking challenges they are currently encountering in a truly hands-on format. Thank you all for your great contributions, and we’re looking forward to seeing you all again next Tuesday!

Many startups fear that the economic distress caused by the Coronavirus pandemic will dry up their funding, or even worse - render their business models moot. Venture capitalists recognize this as well: The Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist Confidence Index Research Report for the first quarter of 2020 indicated its lowest reading of VC sentiment in the 16-year history of that Index. Yet, guidance from Silicon Valley venture capitalists may enable entrepreneurs to ‘sur...vive and then thrive’, Entrepreneurs, as agents of change, may be particularly well suited to evolve their ventures’ business models as there are fewer institutionalized methods of management in their nascent firms. To read more about challenges facing startups impacted by the pandemic and advice from Venture Capitalists, view this article by our Professor Mark Cannice: https://cmr.berkeley.edu/2020/08/entrepreneuring-pandemic/

As so many of us shelter in place, let us stay strong and be reminded of this message from University of San Francisco President Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J.: At this time, I find myself reminded of how St. Ignatius and the early Jesuits talked about their communitas ad dispersionem community in dispersion. In contrast with the older religious orders, who often lived, worked, and prayed together in a single monastery or convent, Jesuit communities spent much of their time scat...tered or dispersed in service to those in need. It wasn’t just that communities were dispersed; it was rather that the communities existed precisely to be scattered in this way. While we may be scattered temporarily during this time of disruption, wherever we are living, working, and studying, the people of USF are strong, supportive, and members of one beloved community.
