Check out our new online exhibition, "Traditions and Transformations: May at 25," which surveys five years of acquisition activity in support of the May Collection. The objects in "Traditions and Transformations" build upon a much longer history of Native American representations that have been stewarded at USD for 25 years. For purposes of this exhibition, we’ve highlighted a few works that confirm new trajectories within this outstanding teaching resource.
As we approach Easter, revisit last semester’s exhibition of Italian Renaissance prints and drawings, Christ: Life, Death & Resurrection, through a virtual tour led by the Hoehn Curatorial Fellow for Prints, John Murphy. The exhibition featured Michelangelo’s drawing 'The Three Crosses', along with powerful images of Christ’s Passion by artists such as Filippo Lippi, Annibale Carracci, and Fra Bartolomeo.
In partnership with the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center, and USD's own Department of Ethnic Studies, University Galleries is proud to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Chicano Park. A selection of posters celebrating Chicano Park Day was scheduled to open on March 30th, but has been postponed for the time being. In the meanwhile, with great respect for the artists involved, we are happy to share this online version of the forthcoming exhibition, together with guest curator Cesar's Castañeda's introduction and personal reflection.
Lovely message from our friend and frequent collaborator, Brian Clack, Director of USD’s Humanities Center, reaffirming the importance of the humanities in gleaning insight and understanding from difficult times.
*Pressing Matters* a virtual look at prints in USD's collection. . . Bob and Roberta Smith is the moniker used by UK based artist, activist, and filmmaker Patrick Brill. Words are central to Smith’s art as his work is composed of slogans in a style one would normally associate with political campaigns or protests. Smith uses his slogans to convey messages of art activism and has involved much of his own efforts into vouching for the importance of art education. "What Unites H...uman Beings" stems from a speech delivered by Smith to the Parliamentary Group for Art, Craft and Design in Education in early 2018. -Elle Necoechea, Curatorial Intern, Summer 2018 . . Happy National Cat Day! The two fancy cheetahs depicted here were included by Francesco Rosselli in his 15th-century print of the Adoration. These guys, and a particularly worried-looking camel, can be seen in the Hoehn Family Galleries as a part of our ongoing exhibition, "Christ: Life, Death and Resurrection." Collections Collecting Collectors: students in Director Derrick Cartwright's class visited the collection of Bram and Sandy Dijkstra, who were kind enough to open their home for us. We could have stayed longer--like for the whole semester. #DAAAHsgood #art #privatecollections #arthistory #usdily @usd_daaah @usdcas @ University of San Diego
