Good morning, happy FriYAY everyone! Hope you’ve all had a wonderful week. In our latest episode of Find Your Research Group Speed Dating: Check out Research Group Highlight #4 - the Dwyer Group: The Dwyer lab research uses NMR spectroscopy and restrained molecular dynamics computations to investigate the stability and structural features of DNA duplexes containing modified or non-natural nucleobases and base pairs. Students learn how to collect, analyze, and quantit...ate complex multi-dimensional NMR data and how to use these data to produce 3D models of solution structures of DNA duplexes #DwyerResearchGroup ______________________ Click the link below to continue our USD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Research Group Webpage where you will find the full version of the Dwyer Group Video as well as several other short videos we will be sharing over the next couple of weeks. https://www.sandiego.edu/.../research/research-groups.php See more

#TBT strikes agin - Dr. Ian Ball is too cool for chemistry lab pictured here as a graduate student at UCLA. ____ Dr. Ball has been teaching gchem and non-majors courses here since 2007. He continues to be full of fresh ideas and enthusiasm for delivering the best course to the students

Happy Wednesday Toreros In our latest episode of Find Your Research Group Speed Dating: Check out Research Group Highlight #3 - the De Haan Group: Aerosol particles mysteriously turn brown as they float around the atmosphere, and this browning adds to the problem of climate change. The De Haan lab tries to determine the chemistry responsible for this browning, and whether it is possible to prevent it. #dehaanresearchgroup ______________________... Is this anyone else’s favorite view coming up East on Linda Vista Road???? Our beautiful building! ____ We start enrichment hours in 151L today! Nine students are welcomed in to 334 for the first time all semester for one hour over the next several weeks by Dr. Hubert, Dr. Schafer, and Dr. Ball, to hands-on practice the techniques they’ve been learning online; such as pipetting, diluting, using the spectrophotometer and titration. Do you remember the first time you tried... to pipet? How much liquid went up into the red bulb... Be Honest!!! No grade given, not required, just an open session for practice and development check with your 151/151L instructor if you’d like to participate, you must sign up first as there is a limit for obvious safety reasons.

Happy Monday all ! Since we don’t have you on campus to host SciMix which is like Find Your Research Group Speed Dating (haha ) we figured we’d post short videos for you to explore on your own time Check out our Research Group Highlight #2 - the Clark Group ! Click the link below to continue our USD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Research Group Webpage where you’ll find the full version of the Clark Research Group Video as well as several other short videos we... will be sharing over the next couple of weeks. https://www.sandiego.edu/.../research/research-groups.php The Clark research group focuses on using metals to catalyze reactions that incorporate boron into organic compounds. Boron is now being used in pharmaceuticals that treat cancer and bacterial infections with more applications under development. We aim to simplify access to a variety of boron-containing molecules with a distant goal of biological applications, new types of catalysts, and as intermediates in organic synthesis. #ClarkResearchGroup

Happy Friday Torero’s - Since we don’t have you on campus to host SciMix which is like Find Your Research Group Speed Dating (haha ) we figured we’d post short videos for you to explore on your own time :) Check out our Research Group Highlight #1 - the Benz lab! Click the link below to continue our USD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Research Group Webpage where you’ll find the full version of the Benz lab as well as several other short videos we will be sharin...g over the next couple of weeks. https://www.sandiego.edu//che/research/research-groups.php In her research, Dr. Benz uses a variety of techniques to investigate reactions on surfaces. Currently, she is interested in probing the adsorptive and reactive properties of surface-supported metal organic frameworks. The goal of this project is to investigate the use of supported nanoporous frameworks for gas storage and pollution remediation. Also of interest to the Benz group is the chemical reactivity and catalytic properties of supported nanoclusters and nanostructures, including metals, oxides, and mixed systems. #BenzResearchGroup See more

The Chemistry & Biochemistry Club (CBC) just finished an excellent event with our very own Dr. Eleanor Gillette. Dr. Gillette was the inaugural speaker of the new "Coffee with Chem & Co" speaker series created by the CBC council. We hope that you will come attend the next event and get to know your Chemistry & Biochemistry family here at USD.

Happy #TBT - Professor Ashley Corrigan Steffey while attending UCSD Scripps Institution of Oceanigraphy for her Master’s Degree after graduating from USD in ‘09 1somewhere off the coast of California 2&3 Studying biogenic organic aerosols in Hyytiala, Finland oh the places you’ll go! ...with a degree in science we are happy to have her back here though, as an invaluable member of our adjunct professors teaching chem 102L, chem 111, chem 105, and chem 151/152

Another shared seminar zoom talk tonight. Dr. Ogba from Chapman University is telling us about his exciting work on organic-inorganic-computational chemistry and their work on how bacteria communities "see" things (quorum sensing).

Happy October all! Is it #TBT again already?! Here’s another #oldiebutgoodie from our previous chair, Dr. Dwyer herself, Here is a photo from my 3rd year in grad school (would have been 1985 - because I am pregnant with my daughter Anne - who just turn 35 last week). I was always the only female in the group - but had wonderful fellow students. The older fellow is Ted Traylor who was a founding chemistry faculty member at UCSD and his wife (Pat Traylor) was a long-time department chair in our department - coincidences abound! #DwyerResearchGroup

Reminder that we added an extra pickup time between 1-3 pm today to come pick up the model kit you registered to get. Make sure to bring your student ID. If your name is not on the list you will be unable to get the kit so please do not come by unless you submitted the form that was sent out a few weeks back in your class. Also, if you requested the kit be sent to you, but you decided you want to pick it up on person, you will be unable to do so as the kits have been sent already. In fact most of you who requested them be sent to you should have them by tomorrow .
