At The Commons, our work is and will continue to be rooted in a Black, queer, feminist lens that seeks collective liberation. With this, we say loudly that Black Lives Matter, and we remain committed to surfacing and disrupting the ways that Black lives have not mattered within our institutions and our culture. We grieve the senseless murders of Breonna Taylor, Tony McCade, George Flloyd, and Ahmaud Arbery and join you in outrage over the state-sanctioned violence that is... and always has been our nation’s status quo. We stand in solidarity with our Black students and colleagues, and we applaud our USD family members involved in direct action in the defense of Black lives. While national attention is on policing and the prison industrial complex right now, we are present too to the role of higher education in perpetuating systemic racism and oppression. Our commitment to you is to elevate conversations that uncover and challenge persistent racism and anti-Blackness at all levels of our institution. ... Some of you have been in this fight with us for a long time and are weary. We understand. Every day, our work’s purpose is to eradicate injustice, inequity, discrimination, and all forms of oppression. It is glaringly apparent how critical this work is. And we want you to know that we see you, and we urge you to find nourishment for the long road ahead. Some of you are alongside us in grappling with our complicity (and complacency) in a system rooted in anti-Blackness and white supremacy. We welcome you, and we encourage you to keep listening, learning, and engaging. We challenge you to stay with it for longer than the conversation is trending on your feeds. For our Black community members who have always had to grapple with a system that perpetuates anti-Blackness, we recognize how difficult this is and has always been. To live within a broken and unfair system that continues to attack and oppress you is unfair and unjust. We know that the legacy of activism within the Black community guides us and leads us as we are now in a new era fighting for civil rights. Together we can make global changes that can change the world as we know it. Cont. in comments
