In "Through the Banks of the Red Cedar," a documentary about the first fully integrated college football team in America, USC alumna Maya Washington retraced th...e footsteps of her father, Michigan State Athletics Hall of Famer Gene Washington. The documentary follows his life from the segregated South to Michigan State, and later the NFL, revealing how scholarships impacted the lives of players of color, who were literally dropped into an integrated environment for the first time, at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in America. At the USC Visions and Voices event on Feb. 6, with support from the Annenberg Institute of Sports, Media, and Society, they screened the documentary and followed that by a panel discussion.
