One of the coolest things about English Walnut is the color contrast between the heartwood and sapwood when you mill freshly cut logs. Over time, the sapwood begins to caramelize and the contrast becomes less distinct - moving closer to a "coffee with cream" color tone. On this slab, you can also see the amazing figure in the sapwood (appearing as darker splotches in the blonde sapwood). Nearly all of our English Walnut logs have figure like this - it'll ripple and shimmer ...in the light once sanded and finished. Ana, our Urban Wood Rescue Technician, stayed after work one day to make a Groot-inspired Swedish log stove out of an off-cut of a redwood log. This video shows her using compressed air to blow out the sawdust after drilling the holes - it's pretty fun! If you've never seen a Swedish log stove, Google it - it's a cool concept and a great way to utilize wood that otherwise couldn't be used as lumber (but make sure to follow fire regulations). Happy Halloween Weekend! We are so excited about our annual Twisted Sale this weekend! We are offering deep discounts on select pieces of urban lumber - up to 50% off. These pieces need a little extra love/energy/work because they've twisted, warped, bent, bowed, etc. (or they're just oddly sized because urban trees don't always grow straight). Drying is the trickiest part of processing wood - many defects occur during this part of the process and can be a result of the w...ood drying too fast in the Sacramento heat, or due to internal stresses in the grain of the wood itself. But just because a slab twisted a little during the drying process doesn't mean it can't still be used! Large slabs can be cut into small sections (for cutting boards or other little projects, for example), or simply flattened to a thinner thickness. In other words, our Twisted Sale honors wood that is still great for all sorts of projects and gives our customers a way to reasonably try it out!
