About the artist: Dr. Mala Swamy is an accomplished Carnatic Vocal Musician with an ‘A’ Grade in the All India Radio. Born into a family of Music Connoisseurs, she started her music training at the tender age of 6 under the able guidance of Smt. Raji Gopalakrishnan in Bombay. Dr. Mala later trained under the renowned teacher Smt. T.R. Balamani for 8 years before she moved to Bangalore. In Bangalore she trained under Smt. Neela Ramagopal for a short period. She then came under the tutelage of Smt. Seeta Rajan, a senior disciple of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. During this period, she was mentored by the legendary musician Sangita Kalanidhi Sri Nedunuri Krishnamurthy. Later Dr. Mala moved to Chennai. She got a Direct B-HIGH grade from All India Radio and in 2006 got her A GRADE. Dr. Mala later trained under the renowned musician Smt Suguna Varadachari, a senior disciple of Sri Musiri Subramania Iyer, after completing her M.A in Indian Music from the University of Madras. She was a rank holder in the University of Madras. Dr. Mala holds an MPhil and PhD from Mother Teresa Women’s University wherein her Doctoral thesis is on A Critical Study of the creative form Niraval. Dr. Mala did her Senior Fellowship with the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, her research topic being Compositions of Tyagaraja in Taccuru Manuscripts. Soon after her Masters, she was absorbed as faculty at University of Madras for almost a decade. She has worked as Product / Concept Manager of Swathi Soft Solutions and has to her credit, a large number Productions of Carnatic Music albums (Both Concerts and Instructional DVDs). Later she joined Shankar Mahadevan Online Academy of Music as Dean and Curriculum Coordinator. She served as Mentor faculty in Kalakshetra Foundation Chennai and later became the Principal of Kalakshetra Foundation in the year 2019. Dr. Mala is Senior Faculty in The University of SILICON ANDHRA, California. Apart from being a performing musician since the age of 17, she is a much sought after Teacher and many of her disciples are already full-fledged performers in the Carnatic field. She has been teaching Music for about 34 years.
