Hello, this is Pearl again with the Los Angeles Single Moms in Poverty series, with today's topic focusing on low-income single parents. I have found this interesting website: http://www.theatlantic.com//how-poor-single-moms-s/418158/ This article speaks of the rise (tripled since 2005) of single parents who struggle even more than low-income married couples. Now there is an estimated 35% children who live with single parents. Due to the 1996 Personal Responsiblity and Work... Opportunity Law, single parents have a harder time receiving government benefits, even to the point of many of them falling out of the spectrum and ultimately being dropped. Single parents who have been "disconnected" rely on family, friends, and social networking in order to share resources and provide information on how to survive. Friends sometimes offer resources, money, and even food that have been taken off the shelves-but many problems surface, such as friends of the opposite sex asking for sexual favors in return. Thus mothers who are not willing to commit this act are deeper in the hole, having much trouble juggling transportation, gas, raising their kids, food, etc. not even food stamps provide these women enough to feed their kids. Despite working multiple jobs, single mothers have more problems coming their way-many are failing classes and failing to spend more time with their kids, resulting in a lack of education and a lack of spending quality time with their families. Our job is to help out your friends as much as you could, and if you were once in their shoes, to provide advice. See more

Today, since Unity is all about communication and understanding between people, I would like to mention the topic, "Does Ethnicity Really Matter?" Recently, all I've been hearing about is the controversy on Star Wars' leading black man, and Jada Pinkett-Smith's boycotting the Oscars. I feel that rather than worrying about such trivial matters, we should be more concerned about more important things such as poverty, war, and social injustices brought upon all fellow Americans.... Forget ethnicity, all our brothers and sisters are going facing painful ordeals in life-the best we could do is have the Oscars be the least of our problems. And clearly, Star Wars VII has proved John Boyega to be a talented actor, and we've all known the Oscars to be a rigged competition since its birth (to blacks and whites alike). Let's forget the simpler things that made us angry today, and work for a brighter future for all of us. Help your fellow men stand on their two feet, regardless of their race or who they are. We are all equal human beings. These links below will help you gain a better understanding :-) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RXkfs8KjRSc https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MT-ONETDL9Q Please show compassion to your fellow men

We had a blessed opportunity to represent UNITY and Art Center College of Design at the LA Food Bank's "Stuff-A-Truck" event held in Gardena on 6/19. We had a live spot at 5:23 PM and were witness to the joyful giving and mountain of food donated. ABC7/LA was there all day long, a girl scout troop helped for hours, and Albertson's staff was on hand to assist members of the public who wanted to donate. Read all about it and see pix on our blog. http://nextlevelbrothers.com/?p=1261

Hi guys! This is your new blogger, Pearl Lee, aka Pearly. For my first series, I will be covering Homelessness in LA. This web source below speaks about homeless mothers and mothers with homes living in poverty. What this study basically did was interview about 200 people from both homeless and housed poor families to gain an understanding of events that trigger family homelessness. Mothers from both groups averaged 29 yrs old and were raising about two to three children. Abo...ut 3/4 of both family groups had income below poverty level, some to the point of not earning enough to support their kids. A crazy TWO-THIRDS are used for housing for families with homes, resulting in only one-third of their income being used for nourishment or other necessities. This is the data they gathered from mothers from both family groups to compare (first number is for homeless/second is for with homes) -Spousal abuse: 35 vs 16 percent -child abuse: 28 vs 10 percent -Drug Use: 43 vs 30 percent -Mental health problems: 14 vs 6 percent These factors have been caused by weaker support networks. Which means they are not being helped enough. The researchers concluded that said problems regarding homelessness is not only caused by issues with housing costs, but domestic abuse and inability in getting along as well. There is more information below on this web page: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov//a/PMC1404866/pdf/amjph00222-0017.pdf So let's discuss how you may resolve this issue, and different ways in which we can help them out as well. Like, let's say...maybe projects that would help their community, such as constructing homes or any other activity that would be useful for them. Here is an example of home building projects: http://kxan.com//texas-am-students-build-tiny-homes-for-a/ Other than these guys, there have been people who have been building homes for homeless by designing them in the way THEY want them to be, all out of plastic and recyclable materials. So think of something! Let's discuss.
