September 17th is Apheresis Awareness Day! Therapeutic apheresis is an extracorporeal therapy, that separates blood components using either centrifugation or filtration. Once separated components can be altered or totally replaced before returning blood to the patient. In Veterinary Medicine we use apheresis for the following:... - Treatment of many immune diseases of the blood, nervous system, skin etc - Treatment of some toxicities, NSAIDs for example - Mononuclear cell collection for application in immuno-oncology - Stem cell collection And many more to come! UC Davis Main Campus and UC Davis Veterinary Medical Center San Diego are two of the few places offering this therapeutic modality in the United States. #ApheresisDay2019

Not all of our feline patients come to us in carriers, some come to us in their space rocket! James is a 10 year Tonkinese who presented for a recheck exam, labs, and a bladder ultrasound with Dr. Cedric Dufayet. James has been doing very well at home and is under the care of Dr. Dufayet & Dr. Ross for FIC (Feline Idiopathic Cystitis). James has his urine monitored regularly by the Urology team and one of the labs run at his visit was a USG (Urine Specific Gravity) to ensure ...his urine is dilute, which helps with managing his condition. James also had an ultrasound to visualize the bladder wall and check for any debris or stones. James is pictured receiving his ultrasound for his bladder. Our patients are not sedated for their Nephrology/Urology ultrasounds. Melissa, our Urology technician, and James have a long history together and she knows James enjoys chin rubs and deep conversations! In order to obtain the best images, James had to have his belly shaved for the ultrasound. Although, not always necessary, shaving allows better contact of the ultrasound probe, resulting in better images. We are so happy to have this adorable astro-kitty in our care and feeling out of this world!

Harlow is an adorable 4 year old Goldendoodle, who came to see our Nephrology/Urology team, 2 months ago for bladder stones. She had x-rays taken that showed stones in her bladder and she was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. Our team suspected Harlow had struvite stones, which can often be dissolved medically. Thanks to the diligence of her parents in making sure she eats ONLY the prescription diet and receives her medications, Harlow is now stone free after 2 months, without any anesthesia or surgery!
