Stay warm but spare the air this winter. The Bay Area has an estimated 1.4 million fireplaces and wood stoves, which are the largest sources of wintertime fine particulate pollution. When a Spare the Air Alert is in effect, it is illegal to use fireplaces, outdoor fire pits, and wood stoves.
