Stay warm but spare the air this winter. The Bay Area has an estimated 1.4 million fireplaces and wood stoves, which are the largest sources of wintertime fine particulate pollution. When a Spare the Air Alert is in effect, it is illegal to use fireplaces, outdoor fire pits, and wood stoves. If you must burn wood during lower risk days, you can reduce harmful smoke by using an EPA-certified burning device, burning only dry seasoned wood, or use a gas or propane barbecue instead of a wood or charcoal-fired cooking device. http://ow.ly/NuEW50CSnuV
