At our 2019 Conference, Dr. Steven Su, the Scientific Director from West Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District will deliver a talk entitled: "Biorational Approaches for Mosquito Control: Governmental Vector Agencies vs. Private Pest Control". ========================== Summary:... The biorational larvicides against mosquitoes primarily refer to microbial larvicides, insect growth regulator and botanical pesticides. Among the microbial larvicides, significant progress has been made in research, development and application of the active ingredients derived from the soil-dwelling bacterium Saccharopolyspora spinosa, besides the well-known Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis and Bacillus sphaericus. As to the insect growth regulators (IGRs), juvenile hormone analog (JHA) methoprene has increasingly used to manage various arthropods of public health importance. Another JHA, pyriproxyfen, the most active mosquito larvicide known today will draw more attention of research and development in the near future. One of the traditional chitin synthesis inhibitor diflubenzuron, along with most recently synthesized novaluron, is expected to play some unique roles in the integrated mosquito management. Botanical pesticides based on azadirachtin from the neem tree have been used in the village-scale integrated pest management in India and other Southeast Asian countries for many decades, industrialization and commercialization of neem-based products for mosquito control are reasonably expected. The biorational larvicides mentioned above have been drawing considerable amount of attention due to their relative target specificity, non-target safety and environmentally friendly profile. The current presentation will briefly review the history, summarize and analyze the current status and project the future development from the research, development and field application perspectives.

At 2019 Conference, Dr. Vernard Lewis will provide a talk entitled: "Structural Fumigation in California: Brief History and Modern Era". Dr. Lewis was a Cooperative Extension Specialist in the Department of Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management at UC Berkeley where he also received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Entomology. Dr. Lewis joined the Berkeley faculty in 1991 and specialized in Urban Entomology. He retired from UC in 2017. During his career Dr. Lewis a...uthored or co-authored more than 150 publications and gave hundreds of lectures and presentations. He also have two structural pest control licenses for the State of California. Dr. Lewis' research involved developing methods of detection and nonchemical control for termites, bed bugs, and other structural/household pests. Lastly, he was inducted into the NPMA Pest Management Hall of Fame in 2016 and will continue with UCB as emeritus. ======== Structural Fumigation in California: Brief History and Modern Era Abstract Structural fumigants have a long history of use in California. Some previous fumigants used go back decades and involved dangerous AIs. Today, only a single active ingredient sulfuryl fluoride (SF) is legally allowed for structural fumigation. There are many efficacy studies that support the use of SF for drywood termites and bed bugs, and some of these studies were conducted in California and will be reviewed. The preparation needed before fumigant introduction are involved, and the most important factors will be reviewed. Some of the more common problems surrounding fumigation will be reviewed along with monitoring, post-fumigation aeration, and supplemental pests labeling.

At our 2019 Conference, Dr. Andrew Sutherland, the Bay Area Urban IPM Advisor, will provide a talk entitled: "Bait is great! Using bait station systems for subterranean termite control in California". Based on his previous field study in SF Bay area, and new proposed state-wide project, Dr. Sutherland will share some interesting information on subterranean termite bating in California.
