UCLA SMERC 03.11.2020

SMERC director, Rajit Gadh, was quoted in an Agence France-Presse (AFP News Agency) article "Californians take a shine to solar power" on solar power in California. The article discusses several aspects of why solar will continue to grow in California.

On July 8, 2017, an explosion at the LADWP power plant in Northridge left 140,000 customers without power in the San Fernando Valley. SMERC director, Rajit Gadh, discussed how weather and the subsequent demand for power can have an effect on these substations.

From UCLA Sustainability -- UCLA Engineering Professor Rajit Gadh and engineering students joined our Director of Energy Services, Cogeneration Plant Manager and other UCLA staff and consultants for a tour of Los Angeles Department of Water & Power's Scattergood Facility. The plant, originally built in the 50s, was repowered with a highly efficient combined cycle (natural gas and steam) turbine and two simple-cycle turbines. Both the combined-cycle and the simple-cycle turbin...es have fast start and ramp-up capabilities for short-term increases in electrical demand and for more flexible integration of renewable energy. The new generating units are 33% more fuel efficient and feature advanced pollution control systems, reducing emissions of air pollutants and greenhouses gases compared to the old plant. The plant repower also eliminated ocean cooling and the impact to local ecosystem by switching to enormous air cooling fans! You can learn more about Scattergood's construction in this video from the company that engineered and constructed it: https://vimeo.com/146656660 See more
