Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that enslaved people in Texas learned they were free in accordance with President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. This past Thursday, President Joe Biden signed legislation into law establishing Juneteenth a federal holiday. While this underscores a monumental moment for our country, we are challenged to reflect on our nation’s history, the horrors of slavery and bondage, and the collective role we play in advancing justice for marginalized communities. We wish everyone a day of reflection in how we will help move this nation toward a more just and equitable future.
