To protect themselves from exposure to viruses like COVID-19, registered nurses (and all medical staff) must cover their nose and mouth, usually by wearing a face mask and sometimes also a face-shield. Unfortunately, for patients, this means interacting with staff whose faces are almost completely coveredmaking it hard to connect on a human level. Together with his colleagues, Yury launched a personal crowdfunding campaign to support UCLA Health in purchasing 86 PAPRs (Power...ed Air Purifying Respirators). PAPRs provide caregivers with a constant flow of filtered air, and simultaneous protection for the eyes, nose, and mouth, but most importantly, PAPRs leave the faces of those wearing them much more visible to others. The PAPR is a solution that allows me to breathe easier, it allows me to stay in the room longer, and it will allow me to take better care of my patients, Yury said. The other nursing stuff I do the hand holding, the listening, the talking, the caring, the supporting that is what was missing in the goggle and mask scenario. Driven by compassion and dedication, Yury raised over $200,000enough to ensure that he and all of his colleagues in the ICU would have access to this game-changing equipment. Yury’s story is proof of the incredible impact one person can have when they inspire others to come together. Want to share your own story and give back to UCLA Health? Breast Cancer Social Media, or #BCSM, is proof of the power of a hashtag. #BCSM an initialism for "breast cancer social media" emerged on Twitter in 2011 as part of a weekly informational chat for #breastcancer patients. Since then, the hashtag has been used over 830,000 times, creating a global, online support system. The #BCSM online community has experienced tremendous growth since its inception because it has helped fulfill a need among patients who were searching for information and support on the platform," said Dr. Deanna Attai, UCLA Health cancer surgeon and lead author of the study Read more. https://ucla.in/3kJof3S
