"I love our ability as nurses to be able to make both an individual and community impact. Navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, we can see nurses working with our patients in the hospital and reaching out to our vulnerable communities, too. We’re involved in so many layers of care, from prevention to direct patient care. I absolutely love this depth to nursing!" In the paper, the scientists said that standard epidemic models incorrectly assume that the rate in which an infectious disease spreads depends on a simple product of the number of infected and susceptible people. https://news.uci.edu//uci-led-study-offers-new-approach-f/
While the scientific research is pretty solid that the vaccine protects you from the virus, it's not entirely clear whether it stops you from spreading the virus to others. https://www.sfgate.com//Do-I-need-to-wear-mask-after-getti #COVID19 #maskup
Academic performance conceals the struggles these students face on a daily basis, said lead study author Laura Enriquez, UCI associate professor of Chicano/Latino studies. https://news.uci.edu//uci-led-study-profiles-undocumented/ #ucinursing #ucirvine
Clinical Professor Susanne Phillips and her team at the COVID-19 test sites do more than offer a test. Early on, she says, they spent a lot of time comforting frightened people. They’d roll down the window and would already be crying. People were really scared. A number of times, people would ask her if a positive result meant they would die. Experiences like these are why Phillips has nurses at every test site. After all, she says, they can train anyone to swab a nasal cavity. It’s the patient connection and the explanation of what this means, what it doesn’t mean, what we know and what we don’t, she says. When she made the decision to become a nurse practitioner, Jun attended an information session at a regional university. She was intrigued by the presentation on geriatric nursing. The presenter predicted that within a decade, the need for geriatric nursing workforce would explode. She was right. This population is getting old. We need innovative ways of taking care of this population, Jun says. She has been planning a community organizing activity for connecting youth and ...geriatrics populations. This July, she joined the faculty of the UCI Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing. One day a week, she will work at Gottschalk Medical Plaza. Currently, she works at one of the COVID test tents in Irvine. The test sites are the result of a partnership between nurse practitioner faculty and UCI Health. One of the most frequently encountered sexually transmitted infections (STI) on the UCI campus is chlamydia. It's also highly contagious and dangerous if untreated. Chlamydia is very contagious and can have little to no symptoms, Assistant Clinical Professor Tiffany Nielsen says. For women, chlamydia is especially concerning because if it’s not treated, it can threaten their fertility. Assistant Clinical Professor Sarah Campbell points out that transmission can occur throug...h oral sex and genital contact without penetration. In an effort to help students understand the risks and protect themselves, Campbell helped produce an informational video along with Dr. Albert Chang and Beth England-Mackie of the Student Wellness Center. Given that many aspects of the nursing profession remain largely female-dominated, it is sometimes assumed that otherwise common issues of gender bias are not a consideration," says Candace Burton, PhD, in her paper recently published in Advances in Nursing Science. #nursingscience #ucinursing https://journals.lww.com//Paying_the_Caring_Tax__The_Detri
