Calling all AAPI doc filmmakers! Submit to A-Doc’s Storytelling Initiative: Asian American Stories of Resilience & Beyond. This past year, Asian Americans have ...faced a double pandemic of COVID-19 and anti-Asian racism. The tragic killings in Atlanta come after a year of increased violence against the Asian American community, fueled by racist and xenophobic political rhetoric. While we’ve seen the rise of anti-Asian racism, we’ve also seen the rise of solidarity efforts within Asian American communities, with Asian-Black solidarity movements, and with other BIPOC communities. On top of this, we are still emerging from the pandemic, finding ways to support our families, rebuild our lives, get vaccinated, and deal with the grief, pain and anger this has brought, as well as moments of joy, resilience, and hope. With these themes in mind, A-Doc is commissioning a new series of microdocs and shorts for 2021. By leaning into our strengths as documentarians of the Asian diaspora, we want to record perspectives that can disrupt mainstream narratives about our communities and serve as a time capsule for future generations. Now is a critical time to amplify our voices and share our stories. It's with much excitement that we announce Firelight's Documentary Lab Open Call 2020. As so many of you know, we pride ourselves on this programon... its ability to turn emerging storytellers into vetted filmmakers, on its staff who encourage fellows to deconstruct, reinterpret and challenge long-standing narratives, and, most importantly, on the unique community of POC artists that the Firelight Doc Lab fosters. In this moment, when POC voices are being left out of the conversation about the industry's future, it's this laband these filmmakersthat give us hope and renewed commitment to our mission.
