What happens when we place ourselves as witnesses within this exhibitionary and legal apparatus? What responses can we generate as a means to honor and remember wasted lives? How do we imagine better collective inclusive futures? @azizisohail is an art curator and writer whose work promotes under-researched histories and builds connections between art, history, fiction, theory and biography. His current research focus lies on the intersections of sexuality and colonialism with migration, law and identity, particularly for individuals from the Global South as they navigate empire(s) and its afterlives. We are with Sora Han, Professor of Criminology, Law and Society, University of California, Irvine, in the monument for her think tank session now: Sound that d...issolves all monuments into thin air In this workshop, we collectively activate the archival materials of American Monument to experience the disjunctive relationship between sound, visuality and law. We then use this experience to discuss how American Monument uniquely precipitates an anti-monumentalist ethic from within the law’s surpluses of evidence. Sora Han is the Director of the Culture & Theory Ph.D. Program at UC Irvine. She is currently working on two books: Slavery as Contract: A Study in the Case of Blackness, which brings together poetics, contract law and afro-pessimist theory to think beyond the property metaphor of slavery; and Mu, the First Letter of an Anti-Colonial Alphabet, an experimental text on the anagrammatic scramble (Nathaniel Mackey) of the unconscious materiality of abolitionism. #laurenwoods #SoraHan #FredMoten #law #sound #listening #hearingbutnotunderstanding
