East LA Interchange Film Screening and Q & A with Filmmaker Betsy Kalin Thursday, October 27th East LA Interchange tells the story of working-class, immigrant Boyle Heights, the oldest neighborhood in East Los Angeles. Targeted by government policies, real estate laws, and California planners, this quintessential immigrant neighborhood survived racially restrictive housing covenants, Japanese-American Internment, Federal redlining policies, lack of political representation, a...nd the building of the largest and busiest freeway interchange system in the nation, the East L.A. Interchange. The documentary explores how the freeways a symbol of Los Angeles ingrained in America’s popular imagination impact Boyle Heights’ residents: literally, as an environmental hazard and structural blockade and figuratively, as a conversational interchange about why the future of their beloved community should matter to us all. 5:00 pm (with reception prior, sponsored by the Architecture & Urban Studies Research Cluster) McCormick Screening Room Q and A with filmmaker Betsy Kalin following the screening Co-sponsored by the Program in Visual Studies and the Department of Chicano-Latino Studies, and Chancellor’s ILLUMINATIONS Initiative

The International Studies Public Forum, UC Humanities Research Institute, and Illuminations Present Revolting Music Neo Muyanga... Thursday Nov. 5, 2015 5:00-6:20 pm Social Sciences Plaza A, Rm 1100 South African musician and co-founder, PanAfrican Space Station "Revolting Music - A survey of the songs of protest that liberated South Africa." It often comes as something of a surprise to many visitors to find that we, in South Africa, sang and danced throughout the decade of the 1980's - a period many agree was one of the most violent phases in the struggle against the system of apartheid, and yet we, the people, sang and we made art fervently during this time. These acts were not merely stratagems for fun but the songs were a part of our arsenal in the fight to secure democratic rights for all and to overthrow the government. During his talk, Neo Muyanga will present a series of anecdotes and medleys of songs of protest from the era of the 80's - songs of his youth - juxtaposed against new songs he has composed in response to the challenges of new socio-political realities in South Africa Today. This talk is sponsored by the Institute for International, Global and Regional Studies (IIGARS)
