[OPEN TO ALL HS STUDENTS CA STATEWIDE] Pilipinx Youth Conference (PYC) 2021 is an annual three-day event hosted by BRIDGE: Pilipinx Outreach and Retention of the University of California, Davis. This year PYC 2021 will be a 3 day conference via Zoom, open to high school students from statewide California. ... PYC aims to empower high school students through workshops focusing on self expression, social activism, and Pilipinx hxstory and culture. The purpose of this conference is to preserve our stories, our Philippine culture, and our hxstory. PYC aims to remind students that their experiences are truly worthy and valid. This conference will foster a space for participants to engage in thoughtful reflection of their past and present experiences in relation to their multiple identities. There is the saying "take space, make space, share space." But what does it really mean to *take space*? In today's post, we discuss a key skill to have: self advocacy. How do we advocate for ourselves in academic spaces and beyond? How do we take up space? How do we speak up and speak out? Why should we? Self advocacy is incredibly important in all aspects of life, but especially higher education, where you are often seen as just a number and everyone is busy. Self advocacy... can take the form of asking for help, demanding more, or standing your ground. It's telling folks, "Hey, let's pause. I need something from you." It's important to remember: if we don't tell them, how will they know? It is more than okay to demand more and need things. It is more than okay to take up the space. In an institution such as this, it's easy to become small. But, through self advocacy, we can work on making our presence known and respected.
