Our NEW event, Celebrating Our Coastal Fibershed, is next week! Join us for a day of regenerative agriculture education (and fun)! This event is dedicated to ce...lebrating food, fiber, and farms and building a coastal fibershed community. Geared towards adults but family-friendly. We will have demos and presentations, sustainable fiber vendors, friendly livestock, picnic lunch by chef Tim Edmonds, ranch tours and more! This event is a #fundraiser to support our educational programs. Visit ucanr.edu/fiber to register! . . . A big thank you to our sponsors! It’s a #wildwednesday ! We have partnered with the Felidae Conservation Fund to place a trail camera around our ranch to capture local wildlife. The #opossum ...is a regular visitor here that is often misunderstood. Incorrectly perceived as nuisances and dirty, it’s actually the opposite: Opossums are vital to our #ecosystem for pest control and sanitation. Not only do they eat rodents, snakes, worms, and insects, they also consume rotting produce, garbage, and skeletons from rodents and road kill! Opossums are quite clean animals that groom themselves as regularly as house cats, and are immune to many diseases. They can rarely carry rabies since their body temperature is so low. This docile #marsupial will usually choose to run away or play possum when threatened. Next time you see this opportunistic #omnivore , give her space and let her continue her hunting. She may be cleaning up your own backyard! #californiawildlife #animalfacts #themoreyouknow Thanks to California Wildlife Center for the great opossum information!

Did you know horses get pedicures? Our amazing #farrier Dana trims all of our #equines at #elkusranch Horse and donkey hooves (and other animal hooves for tha...t matter!) are made of #keratin and grow like our fingernails. Regular hoof trimmings are vital for healthy hoof development and farriers are equine professionals who specialize in equine hoof trimming. Not all horses wear #horseshoes (ours are barefoot) but they still require regular filings. Dana trims our #seniorhorses and #miniaturesdonkeys every 8-10 weeks! #horsefacts #themoreyouknow See more
