The European Commission today adopted two sets of standard contractual clauses, one set for data transfers between controllers and processors and one set for transfers of personal data to third countries. This takes into account the new requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Schrems II ruling of the European Court of Justice and ensures a high level of data protection for citizens. The new instruments offer European companies greater legal pre...dictability, help SMEs in particular to ensure compliance with the requirements for secure data transfers and at the same time enable unhindered cross-border data transfers without legal barriers. The new Standard Contractual Clauses also take into account the joint opinion of the European Data Protection Board and the European Data Protection Supervisor, the feedback received from stakeholders during an extensive public consultation and the opinion of the representatives of the Member States. The Vice-President of the Commission responsible for valuesand transparency, Vra Jourová, said: We want to remain open in Europe and enable free movement of data, provided that the data is protected. The modernized standard contractual clauses will help to achieve this goal.
