Kung Fu training without sparring becomes only traditional dance. We use several types of partner training to help students gain a functional ability to apply what they learn for their self defense.

Perfect illustration of how skill and resilience are built side by side. This child is about 3 or 4. Their trust and rapport is obvious. The skills they're working on are very challenging. There is risk involved. A painful mistake is made. She cries a bit. He acknowledges the pain and the frustration. Then, he shows her that it's not the end of the world, it's part of the learning process, and there is a way to move forward. She can. He holds her as being capable of progress.... Lo and behold... She nails it. And she beams with the pride of achievement. Confidence comes from competence. Competence in any skill can only come from frequent repetition over time, and that means moving beyond initial failure and frustration and into the flow state where stress and enjoyment are optimal. They've done it. We do this in the kung fu school every day. You can do this. Come train. See more

The ability to defend one's own body is a basic human need. Martial arts training is at least as important as studying math. Can you imagine ever letting a kid off the hook from studying math just because they didn't like it or weren't good at it at first? No, in fact doing so would be called neglect or possibly even child abuse. This father is 100% going the right direction with his son and doing it with compassion.

Think of your training as an exercise in applied neurology. You're building connections between your brain and your body via your entire nervous system. The classic analogy is that of building a stack of paper. Each day you train, you add one sheet to the stack. You've strengthened the wiring of your skills. Each day you skip, you remove 10 sheets from the stack. Your skills atrophy that quickly and you don't realize what you've lost. Don't skip days.
