Touro Student-Run Free Clinic 09.12.2020

Volunteer Event On October 5th, Touro University of California along with SRFC joined Vallejo City Unified School District for a Drive-Through Tdap Vaccination Clinic. Volunteers to staff the drive-through vaccination clinic included faculty and students from all of TUC’s healthcare programs (College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Pharmacy, Joint Physician Assistant and MPH programs, and School of Nursing), as well as volunteers from VCUSD staff. It was a privilege to work with the Vallejo community and provide this service for Vallejo students.

Touro University is a unique campus that welcomes students from different cultural and religious backgrounds. Today we would like to showcase our South Asian students that are celebrating Diwali. Diwali is a Festival of Lights mainly celebrated by Hindus, Sikh and Jain faiths. The festival usually lasts five days and is celebrated during the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika. For some, Diwali also coincides with harvest and new year celebrations, and is a festival of new beginn...ings, the triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness. Due to the pandemic, students were limited in celebrating the festival with their loved ones, but we hope that this post brings the Touro Community together, and displays the diversity of our campus to the Vallejo community. One of the Osteopathic Tenets teaches us that the human body is a unit of body, mind, and spirit. As a community, we are facing challenging times and we want to emphasize the mental health of our patients and students. On this page, we will start sharing religious and spiritual holidays that are celebrated at Touro University as well as in the Vallejo community in hopes of spreading positivity and learning about our backgrounds. By spreading awareness, we will become closer and stronger together.

Vallejo City Unified School District Immunization Clinic is working with Touro University on October 5-7 to provide required immunizations for school age children. To participate, you need to fill in the survey below to be placed into the appropriate shifts based on your qualifications. You don’t need to be involved in TUStudentLife, AKE modules, or other training systems. Different volunteer roles will include: Check-In Hosts, Vaccinator Team, Rest Area Host, Vaccine Runners. Each day will have two shifts: 2:-5:30 and 5-7:30. Students should sign up with housemates/quaranTeam buddies. The assigning of roles will be done by SRFC leadership. This is a great and one of the few volunteering opportunities we had, so don’t miss out! https://tuc.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eKhYiQiu4khw49D

Meet Michelle Nguyen, Director of COM I had known about the SRFC before I matriculated at Touro and knew it was an organization I hoped to get involved with. I liked how the SRFC provided not just resources to the community but also provided students with the opportunity to engage in these communities and enrich their education through hands-on experience.

Meet Anastasia Ibrahim Clinical Coordinator Chair I joined the SRFC team because I wanted to take active role in being an advocate for patients in our community. Knowing the obstacles, economically, socially and beyond, that many communities face in their access to healthcare, it was important for me to become involved in a clinic that worked towards reducing those barriers and providing everyone’s basic right to healthcare. At the SRFC, I not only get to work with a diverse group of talented and passionate interprofessional healthcare students but also am reminded by the patients we see of why I chose to become a healthcare provider in the first place.

Statement from The Student Run Free Clinic: The hurt and anger is this country is palpable. The Black community is hurting, your fellow colleagues are hurting, and we all need a safe space to comprehend the trauma we are experiencing. I want to primarily state that I am here for you if you need conversation or comfort during this time. As a leading body on the Touro campus that prides itself on interprofessionalism, the SRFC family has the opportunity and the responsibility t...o make a change. We all share the passion for providing care to the underserved, and now is the time to spread change through our actions. As colleagues from different programs all across campus, we have the unique opportunity to come together to discuss and brainstorm on how we as a clinic and as a university can improve. As future providers, we have the responsibility to educate and inform ourselves to create safer spaces for our patients. I have found myself feeling helpless during this time without realizing the true power we all hold to make a difference. There are a few simple steps we can all take to get involved. Reach out to your fellow board members, and your leaders within the executive board. Ask how you can get involved in our projects to perpetuate change. Reach out to Sean Wang ([email protected]) to get involved in our HOPE project that aims to provide culturally competent care to the community of Vallejo in consideration of social determinants of health. Ask yourself how we can improve our practice in the clinic for the Black community, how we can make the clinic a safer place for Black students, how we can train future SRFC members on the importance of cultural competency, how can we practice mindfulness to continue to uphold these practices. We may not be able to practice in the clinic, but this time of physical distancing provides the opportunity to make improvements on policy and set the groundwork to implement when we are operating. Our June SRFC Executive Board Meeting on Thursday June 25th at 4:30, is dedicated to planning for clinic reopening (likely in Fall) amid COVID-19, however I would like to add the discussion of how we can improve the experience at the clinic for Black Americans. If you feel moved to share your voice and ideas, I implore you to join us. Please send me an email of your intent to participate and I will be happy to extend the invitation. We can do better. We must do better. I thank you for standing in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. If you would like resources on how to further educate and inform yourself on Anti-Racism, here is a google document full of news sources, books, films, and more.
