Suicide Prevention and mental health awareness was taken to a new level for Visalia Youth Services. Program Director Ivan Rodriguez had the privilege of spreading awareness regarding suicide prevention on Channel 21 (Univision) in a segment dedicated to mental health awareness. He was able to share about the impact of COVID-19 on mental health, including the importance of intervention, seeking training, learning about local resources and taking care of our Youth through reducing stigma, treating mental health as "just health" and accessing community supports. #vys #youth #services #resources #mentalhealth #univision #intervention #training #support #community #tpocc #since1970 #ca

Program Highlight: Porterville Welcome Center Porterville Welcome Center currently offers drop in services daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Beginning November 1, 2020, the program will offer 10 beds of emergency shelter and 10 beds of bridge housing. PWC is a navigation center model program offering services on site to assist individuals, couples, their pets, and their posessions with achieving the goal of housing. Services offered include case management, linkages to commun...ity resources, assistance with accessing mainstream benefits, and transportation to appointments, as available. PWC operates a housing first model approach to shelter and services. Sequoia Youth Services recently did a presentation to Deep Creek Academy School staff, along with over 60 students, to introduce PURE group (Purpose Understanding Respect Excellence). This group and others to come will offer help to struggling students who may impacted with the current times; Covid-19 pandemic, school closures, lack of social interaction, family matters and more. SYS staff will be modeling equanimity, while assisting students with normalizing feelings, including fostering age-appropriate conversations about anxiety and depression.
