Hear the words private & open adoption thrown around a lot? Let’s break them down... Private adoption just means that you, the expectant parent, are placing your baby for adoption with a family of your choice. There’s no foster agency or county social worker involved. A private adoption is either an agency adoption (handled by an agency) or an independent adoption (handled by an attorney). When it comes to open adoption, there are different degrees. In the biggest sen...se, it just means that you and the adoptive family know each other’s basic information. It may also mean that you agree to share contact information over the years. Be careful here. Just because an agency or family says that they want an open adoption, doesn’t guarantee your ongoing relationship with your child over the years. For that, you will need a Post-Adoption Contact Agreement (sometimes referred to as a PACA) which clearly spells out your plan for contact. Don’t ever be afraid to ask what something means. TruAdopt ensures that a woman facing an unintended pregnancy is provided the opportunity for unbiased Options Counseling with a pregnancy clinic or therapist in her area. When a woman discovers her unintended pregnancy, she is faced with three main options: parenting, adoption or abortion. To avoid the conflict inherently present when an Expectant Parent is counseled by someone who holds a financial stake in the outcome (such as an adoption agency, law practice, facilitator or abortion clinic), Options Counseling should be conducted by a neutral third party provider, such as a licensed therapist or lay counselor. At first consideration, adding another lawyer to the mix may seem like overkill. After all, it’s not like the adoptive parents and the expectant parents are adversaries. Because hey, in an adoption, everyone’s working toward the same goal, right? When a birth mother signs a relinquishment for adoption, she is agreeing to permanently sever her legal relationship with her child and voluntarily deprive herself of the fundamental right to the care, custody and control of that chi...ld. Once the consent paperwork is signed and her revocation period has expired, that right is gone forever. Allowing an expectant mom to go through the adoption process without her own separate attorney creates a clear imbalance of power which puts the adoptive parents (and the entire adoption) at risk. Best practice (and basic common sense) dictates that all parties in an adoption should have access to separate legal representation. . . . I woke up to the glorious sight of my youngest daughter standing by my bed. Her outstretched hands held a mug of hot, strong coffee. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom, she said. I was thinking, this must be a really hard day for birth mothers. Yes, I offered in agreement. It’s complicated. Social media is fraught territory for us during this weekend each year. As we celebrate motherhood in all its different forms, we are acutely aware of the loss this day represents for so ma...ny women we love. Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing first mothers we’ve had the privilege of knowing over the past 18 years. A very good word from our friends at Darling Magazine... Healing doesn’t come casually. Time certainly does some stitching, but the deeper cuts require much more work. Whether we’ve been hurt by someone or have suffered from trauma, refusing to process can keep us from wholeness . . . Don’t let trauma have the final say. Don’t let grief be your only companion. Let healing seep in as you take time to process your hurt whether it be with a counselor, a support group or a close friend. Be honest with your struggles so that you can grow in your strengths.
