You’ve heard of the John Muir Trail, but have you heard of the High Sierra Trail? Here’s a fun film about it.
#WorldRangerDay honors rangers around the world who work to preserve and protect important natural and cultural places. It's also a day to remember and commemor...ate those who have lost their lives serving on the front line protecting the environment around them. Rangers work under varying conditions and in varying positions with some being faced with difficult and dangerous tasks. They are key protectors of parks and conservation. This is done through law enforcement, environmental education, community relations, fighting fires, conducting search and rescues, research, interpretation, and in many other ways. Each year, thousands of hikers enter Grand Canyon on Bright Angel Trail. They follow a route established by prehistoric people for two key reasons: water and ac...cess. Water emerges from springs at Indian Garden, and a fault creates a break in the cliffs, providing access to the springs. . When hiking Grand Canyon in the summer, timing is everything! Avoid hiking during the hottest hours of the day when the sun is at its most intense, typically between 10 am and 4 pm. There is little shade available in most of the canyon, so be sure to plan your hike so you either reach your destination before 10 am, or are able to rest in the shade (preferably near water) during the heat of the day. . Some hikers are on the trail just before dawn or right around dusk to avoid the summer heat. Just be sure to carry a lightweight flashlight or headlamp to help you find your way in the dark. . For the first time in nearly half a century, California condors have been spotted in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Condors were spotted atop Moro Roc...k, a popular hiking destination in Sequoia, on May 28. They are back to the towering trees and cliffs of the park after being absent for nearly 50 years. The National Park Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service continue to work together to support the recovery.
