How to Stop Credit Reporting Agencies From Selling Your Information Everyone has received those annoying credit card and mortgage refinance requests in the mail. Unfortunately, these offers that appear in our mailboxes can cause us to be the victim of identity theft if they are removed from mailboxes by thieves or not shredded and destroyed before being thrown in the trash. Thieves are finding more ingenious methods for obtaining the identity of credit-worthy citizens, and us...ing those identities for illegal purposes. What is equally unsettling is that the worst culprits for selling names to these types of companies are the three major credit bureaus. For this reason it is important to learn how to stop credit reporting agencies from selling your information. Steps 1 Go to www.optoutprescreen.com. 2 Select "Opt In or Opt Out" located at the bottom of the page. The button is a large blue button with white letters. 3 A new web page opens. 4 Choose which option you are requesting by clicking in the circle next to the option. If you choose "Opt In" you will begin receiving credit offers in the mail. If you choose "Electronic Opt Out for Five Years", your name will not be sold by credit bureaus to those who issue credit offers by mail for the next five years. If you choose "Permanent Opt Out By Mail", you will be instructed to print out and mail the form as credit bureaus must have a live signature in order to permanently remove you from their lists. A new page opens with a form that must be completed. 5 Complete all information in the form and click the submit button at the bottom. A confirmation page opens. 6 Print the confirmation page for your records. Tips You may also exercise the Opt-Out option by writing letters to each credit reporting agency, requesting that your name be removed. This takes a little longer than completing the form online. Calling 1-888-5-OPT-OUT (1-888-567-8688) is still available for those who prefer to exercise this option over the phone. Consumers who choose to opt-out of credit offers may also want to register for the National Do Not Call Registry. Consumers may also contact the Direct Mail Marketing Association (DMA) regarding other options available to reduce junk mail. Choosing the Opt-Out option, whether for five-years or permanently, will not affect your ability to get credit, nor will it have an impact on your credit score. Always shred or cut into small pieces any credit offers received in the mail. Do not throw them in the trash in tact as thieves can find the information and apply for credit fraudulently. Warnings It can take several weeks before your Opt-Out information is sent to credit card companies, so you may continue to get offers over a few weeks. You should see a drastic reduction in these offers, however, as time goes on. If you choose to file the electronic opt-out option, remember that you will need to renew your request after five years.
