Did you know there are 5 factors in determining a consumer’s credit score? 1. Payment History (35%) Whether you pay your bills on time is very important. ... Late payments reported within the last six months are going to have a larger impact than those reported over two years ago. The higher the late payment the more of an impact it will have. A mortgage late typically affects your score the most. 2. Balance owed in relation to your credit limit (30%) Try not to have a balance that exceeds 20% of your limit. You can ask your creditor to increase your limit to improve the debt to limit ratio. However, ask them to base the request on existing payment history vs. pulling your credit report which creates an inquiry. Mortgage and installment debt are a factor, but they are minimal compared to revolving debt. 3. Length of credit history (15%) Generally, the longer you’ve had an established credit history, the better. Having the same credit card for a long time (i.e. 20 years) will benefit your score. If you don’t use a credit card for 6 months, it goes inactive. So even if you only charge gas on it and then pay it off, that will keep it active. 4. What type of credit you use (10%) The ideal mix: 3-5 revolving credit cards (However, don’t necessarily close cards to get down to 3-5. Even if you have a zero balance it helps your score because of the balance vs. limit ratio and length of credit history.) 1 auto loan 1 mortgage 5. Inquiries (10%) All auto & mortgage inquiries made within 45 days of each other count as 1 inquiry Inquiries stay on for 1 year and each inquiry is approximately a 5 point hit
