(Originally posted on Friday, March 5, 2021) Springtime = time to raise baby chicks at Toothacre Ranch. These chicks were not hatched here; I bought them at #Kahoots, our wonderful local feed store. ... Of note: I am not going to keep all 25 chicks, I am raising some for Teri Kerns. However, I am going to the Peep Show tomorrow and will bring home a few more Heirloom breed chicks. Yes, you can call me a Crazy Chicken Lady. Here are the breeds I bought today: #Andalusian Blue #Australorp Blue #Barnevelder. Chocolate egg color #Cochin Silver Laced, a lap chicken with feathered feet! #CreamLegbar, best laying breed of all chickens #Delaware Very large eggs #jerseyGiant Blue #Maran Black Copper #OliveEgger lays green eggs!!! #PlymouthRock Blue, exceptionally friendly #Penedesenca Crele - lays the darkest eggs of any chicken breed, a black/chocolate color! #RhodeIslandRed #RussianOrloff Blue #SalmonFeverolle #Silkie White - small with fluffy feathers everywhere, including feet. #Wyandott Silver Laced If you have read this far, you may be wondering what the Peep Show is... read on for the answer: The Peep Show is the name of an event held each Spring for one day only at the Hawthorne Country Store. They sell speciality and heritage one day old chicks, and you pay to attend the event, then pay silly prices for the fancy little peepers. The Peep Show list had some duplicates of the chicks I got at Kahoots on Friday, which means they were much less expensive from Kahoots. I learned the hard way that most chicks are priced around $5/each at Kahoots, vs. $$$$$ at the Peep Show. I attended a Peep Show event three years ago and went a little crazy - but we sure had a beautiful flock!! This spring, we finally get to restock the flock since we are finally getting the Aviary built, with netting around the top to keep the hawks away, and the fence around the corral is now concreted in so the predators that surround us can't get in to take our feathered pets.
