Happy New Year! Start the New Year with some new ideas and strategies for fighting racism and bias: Upcoming Anti-Bias and Anti Hatred Family Workshops https://www.rootsconnected.org/family-workshops... Speaking Up Against Racism and Bias in the Moment with My Kids (Scenario Work) In addition to having planned conversations with your child, moments that provide an opportunity to discuss race and racism arise when we aren't expecting it, and we must say something. This workshop will focus on speaking up in the moment when racist and biased incidents occur. The Use of Stories to Build a Sense of Family and Cultural Identity and Pride There is power in sharing your personal stories - the power to build connection, the power to inspire and even the power to get your kids to listen. In this session, our presenters will support families in utilizing the tool of storytelling as a way to give power back to the untold stories and the stories we want to tell to define our families. Reading Books with My Kids Using a Critical Literacy Lens We have seen a lot of lists circulate with wonderful books for the home library, ones with increased representation. However, how are we reading those books with our kids? How are we reading the books that don’t represent different racial identities? One of the things we think is critical is the way in which we push our children to ask questions, and look for bias, omission, and stereotypes in the books we read.

This is deeply engrained in our practices at City Charter Schools. Kids need to feel seen and heard as their full selves.

First Day of School 2020 'Twas the first day of school, when all through the house All the Chromebooks were charged and hooked up to a mouse; The wifi connections were set up with care,... In hopes that the first Zoom soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds, Who needs real pants? All they’ll see is our heads; The parents are wringing their hands wondering, What more could this pandemic possibly bring? When there on the cell phone there came such a clatter, Parent Square Alerts? Texts? Now what was the matter? Opening messages, no time to lose, Haven’t had coffee, no time to hit snooze. Zoom has gone down from East Coast to West, This start of school is not looking the best, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, A message from the teacher, don’t fear! With a new Google Meets link, provided so quick, We knew in a moment distance learning will stick. With undying committed to students they came, Teachers whistled, and shouted, and called them by name; "Now, CLEVER! now, CANVAS! now, NEARPOD and SEESAW! On, GOOGLE! on WIFI! on, CHROMEBOOK and YOUTUBE! To the top of the screen! Into modules you fall! Now fire up! fire up! fire up all!" As we turned on our screens, and virtual backgrounds, Into our homes teachers came with a bound. Their eyes -- how they twinkled! their dimples how merry! Their cheeks were like roses, pixelated and blurry! City teachers were smiling, welcoming, and warm, Working their magic, spreading their charm; Their lessons griped us like magical spells; And we laughed when we saw them, in spite of ourselves; A click on their Flipgrid and funny chat thread, Soon gave us to know we had nothing to dread; We clicked on the links, and went straight to work, We learned new skills; we could not just lurk, This will be a great year, if a little bit odd, We are sure to get through it with or without a pod, From the whole City team, as we ring the first bell, HAPPY FIRST DAY TO ALL, AND TO ALL STAY WELL!
Loving (and planning to dig in and use) this newly published guide to an Abolitionist approach to SEL. https://abolitionistteachingnetwork.org/guide "Abolitionist Teachers believe that no Black, Brown, or Indigenous child is disposable. We must embody the spirit... of Black Lives Mattering, not just say Black Lives Matter." See more
Karla and Jedidah walk us through all 5 Rs of school integration, while also sharing their own experiences being impacted by segregation. These youth leaders are passionate and inspiring, and remind us of the power of youth voice.
Need a break from the impossible? Hear the amazing Zaretta Hammond inspire us about what is POSSIBLE when we humanize education at the intersection of SEL and culturally responsive pedagogy. #equity #antiracist #knowbetterdobetter
Roots Connected is a great org that does amazing training. Highly recommend.
This is a great starting point for all of us. #antiracist #BLM #knowbetterdobetter
1) Where We Begin... Maybe you're new to the antiracist school integration movement or know someone else who is. Maybe your children attend a global majority school but you want to "know better and do better" as an integrating parent. Integrated Schools is excited to announce a webinar welcoming newcomers to the antiracist school integration movement. https://integratedschools.flipcause.com//cause_p/Nzc0MjY=#! White supremacy culture normalizes school segregation. This did...n’t happen by accident. Join Integrated Schools Monday, July 13, in exploring how our schools got to where they are now, and how we can be intentional in our choices for our own kids. Monday, July 13 5-6:30 PM Pacific 6-7:30 PM Mountain 7-8:30 PM Central 8-9:30 PM Eastern 2) Awkward Conversations Guide https://mailchi.mp/b7d97e1aea5d/awkward-conversations-guide The schools conversation happens everywhere. For many White and/or privileged parents, school choice anxiety is steeped in a racially-biased broken schools narrative that presumes that public education is failing us, and that schools are either bad (common) or good (exceptional). For those of us seeking to disrupt this narrative, these conversations can be messy and nuanced and complicated; fraught issues of parenting, community, race, and class are all in play. Integrated Schools' Awkward Conversations Guide is designed to help you engage in the schools conversation in ways that ultimately transform the toxic schools narrative, one playground encounter at a time. While knowing what to say in the moment is not always easy, we have the power to expose racist ideas and begin to dismantle a White supremacy culture that shapes our choices and impacts our society. Your voice matters! We need your help TODAY to ensure that charter schools receive FULL FUNDING for next year. We were surprised and disheartened to see the Governor and State Leg...islature put a cap on next year's (2020-21) funding at last year's (2019-20) levels in the state budget. That means under the proposed budget, our schools will not be funded for any additional students we enroll in 2020-2021. Cuts of this magnitude would have a devastating impact on the choices that thousands of families make each year to change schools, move or enroll in a charter school. This is unfair to those school districts and charter schools that have increasing enrollments, and undermines parents’ choices on the best school programs to serve their children for the coming school year. Please TAKE ACTION NOW to call your legislators and let them know you oppose the exclusion of funding for growing charter schools. It only takes five minutes. When you click on the link you will see the talking points and it will automatically connect you to your representative. [https://p2a.co/G6rLaAp](https://p2a.co/G6rLaAp)
Congrats to our class of 2020 graduates! You persisted and thrived through this strangest of school years, and we could not be more proud of you. Many of you have been with us since Kinder, and we have loved seeing you grow. Best of luck in your next adventure!
Juneteenth is an important milestone, and like many milestones in the fight against white supremacy and oppression, was a beginning. Juneteenth was demanded and fought for by the oppressed and did not end the oppression. Same can be said of the civil rights movement. We need to do more today to sustain the legacy they built in the fight for freedom. That said - happy Juneteenth.
