#TippingSpotlight on Ashley Waite, Project Engineer, who joined Tipping in 2017 and is a graduate of Santa Clara University (BS & MS in Civil Engineering), share her insights: On Tipping // "Tipping is always up for the challenge. We pride ourselves in being innovative and efficient with our designs while meeting the client’s needs. We think outside of the box and push the boundaries of structural engineering." Current Project // The San Francisco Conservatory of Music's new ...Bowes Center "was my first multi-story concrete construction project where I was involved from the CD phase to now seeing it in construction. It was exciting for me to see members that I designed and detailed come to fruition on the site. My favorite feature is the drastic slanted roof in the Performance Hall that has very tall, slender steel columns." Industry Advice // "I entered the profession because I always enjoyed being creative and problem-solving. Structural engineering is a perfect blend of making ideas become a reality while challenging your knowledge of fundamental principles. I would advise young engineers entering the profession to be patient and to ask a lot of questions! It is okay to not know the answer to everything." Challenges // "I would like to see a bigger effort from owners and developers to retrofit existing structures in lieu of demolishing for new construction. I am currently working on the Hacienda Apartments in Richmond, an uninhabited apartment complex constructed in the 60’s, where we are seismically strengthening the structure, adding community spaces, and providing miscellaneous interior improvements. I'm delighted to be involved in giving this building a new life for people to enjoy for many years to come. Developing an integrated and sustainable long-term solution for the team has been challenging but very rewarding." Ashley is also the current SEAONC YMF Treasurer and enjoys planning social events for young structural engineers in the Bay Area! Images courtesy of Ashely.

Inside the Commonwealth Club of California* at 110 Embarcadero, where strategic engineering helped breathe new life into this august San Francisco institution a new headquarters designed by Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects and built by Oliver and Company. Among other things, structural work included a seismic upgrade in accordance with current code, and an architecturally exposed steel stair connecting the main lobby on the first floor to the second floor. *Currently closed fo...r in-person programming, check out The Commonwealth Club of California’s virtual events, including their first Virtual Gala happening Friday, October 16th: www.commonwealthclub.org Image: Bruce Damonte | Tipping Team: Marc Steyer, Ian Kelso, SE AIA, Joy Wei | #tippingstructural #cwclub #theembarcadero #sanfrancisco #structuraldesign #structuralengineers #innovativestructures #highperformancestructures #seismicupgrade

#TippingSpotlight interview with Nick Bucci, Associate, who joined Tipping in 2007 and is a graduate of UCLA (BS) and UC Berkeley (MSCE): Current Projects // I am currently managing three different projects which are all nearing completion: 300 Grant a new concrete structure, Acheson Commons a historic URM retrofit and renovation, 2621 Tenth Street Kaiser Medical Office Building (MOB) a new ConXtech steel-framed structure. These projects highlight the diversity of work... that I personally enjoy and make Tipping Structural a unique place to work. I love seeing my team’s projects through to completion, especially when the structure is well integrated into the complete building. On Collaboration // I enjoy working with the project team and architect to help create an integrated structural solution and the architect’s vision. This often pushes us to think of creative solutions that ultimately are better for the overall project, and most of the time more enjoyable to design. Many of my favorite past projects included challenging structural designs that were new and creative such as 740 Heinz mast brace frame, and San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) with vertically post-tensioned shear wall, and a base-isolated private residence. Industry Advice // My favorite part of the structural engineering profession is seeing our design move from an idea in our minds, to sketches, to full designs on paper, into construction, and finally viewing the finished building. I try to take every opportunity, and encourage others, to visit the construction site to see first-hand the construction, size, scale, and construction methods of how our designs are completed. On Tipping // We approach the projects holistically and try to find the structural solution that makes the most sense for the project. This leads to creative and unique structural solutions and a wide diversity of project types. We view structural engineering as an opportunity to provide service and help our clients achieve their goals. Images courtesy of Nick Bucci and Gina Beretta (300 Grant).

Currently under construction in San Francisco, the 90,000 sf vertical addition at #633Folsom consists of a steel frame with a thoughtful column layout aiming to minimize added weight and reduce the need to strengthen existing columns and foundations. A careful study of the original structure provided opportunities to capitalize on the existing configuration: repurposing a hollow shaft within existing perimeter columns into an infill column allowed for support of the vertical ...addition and enhanced the ductility of the existing perimeter frame. Construction is nearing completion at #300Grant, a new 70,000 sq ft, 6-story building in the San Francisco’s Union Square constructed for retail and office space. The L-shaped building transformation designed by MBH Architects and being built by Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company is set on the corners of Grant Ave, Sutter St, and Harlan Place. Swipe for the before image. Designed with an emphasis on open floor plans, MBH and Tipping proposed an unconventional seismic solution utilizing special concrete moment frame in parallel with special concrete shear walls, a lateral system configuration demonstrated excellent seismic performance despite the apparent torsional irregularity.
