PARENTS! Your attitude about math affects your child’s attitude about math! . This was a conversation that I had with my second grader after school one day last week. It occurred to me later that this conversation could have headed in a negative direction. But to me, math is fun. Math is games, and puzzles, and curiosity, and discovery. And because of this, math is not the four-letter word in our house that I’ve been told it is in some houses. . Please, please, for yo...ur kids, try to look at math as an adventure! I realize that you might not have had positive experiences with math as a child, and for that my heart goes out to you, but hit me up for some resources if you’d like to develop a more positive relationship with math. As one of my favorites, Cherelle McKnight @powerasc has said, Math loves you, and is waiting on you to love her back. . . . #mathisfun #mathiseverywhere #mathintherealworld #mathathome #mathactivities #ilovemath #iteachmath #mathtutor #math #maths #kindergartenmath #elementarymath #teachersofinstagram #mathteacher #mathteachers #mathteachertribe #homeschool #distancelearning #igteachers #iteach #iteachk #iteach1st #iteach2nd #iteach3rd #iteach4th #iteach5th #stem #steam #teachersfollowteachers See more

Today’s Where’s the Math Wednesday event is all about math in warm weather! And when I think back over activities that I’ve done with my kids when the weather warmed up, some of my fondest memories are of the lazy afternoons my toddlers/preschoolers spent at our water table. . Water tables are absolutely brilliant, because we all know that messy play is good for little ones, but we don’t always feel like cleaning up afterward! Thankfully it doesn’t get much easier to c...lean up than water! . So, where’s the math? Volume, of course! My kids loved when I put items such as measuring cups, (clean) food containers, ice cube trays, funnels, turkey basters, etc into their water table. But before a child can understand volume conceptually, they first must understand *Conservation*. Conservation refers to a logical thinking ability that allows a person to determine that a certain quantity will remain the same despite adjustment of the container, shape, or apparent size, according to the psychologist Jean Piaget. His theory posits that this ability is not present in children during the preoperational stage of their development at ages 27 but develops in the concrete operational stage from ages 711. (Wikipedia) . Is this news to you? Head to YouTube and search for Piaget Conservation. Back when I was taking credential classes and I saw these videos, I was BLOWN AWAY that a 5 or 6 year old would pour liquid from a short glass to a tall, skinny one, and then report that the skinny glass contained more. Every. Time. So all of that time spent pouring liquid from one container to another to another at the water table was actually teaching my kids about Conservation. Amazing. . Thank you to @countingwithkids for inviting me to participate in this Where’s the Math Wednesday event! I LOVE learning new ideas, strategies, etc from my math friends on IG! Thanks to @mathwithmsrivera, I was able to help an algebra student with multiplying binomials using the Box Method! . We have used the Distributive Property to FOIL problems like this a few times now, but it wasn’t sticking. When I saw a post recently about multiplying polynomials visually using the Box Method, I was thrilled to try it! . Aside from just making sense visually, I think algebra student...s these days clearly remember using area models to multiply numbers in elementary school. This Box Method is such a natural extension of their work in elementary school! . What new teaching methods have you learned recently that have made a big difference to your students? . . . #mathisfun #mathiseverywhere #mathactivities #ilovemath #iteachmath #mathtutor #math #maths #elementarymath #teachersofinstagram #mathteacher #mathteachers #mathteachertribe #homeschool #distancelearning #igteachers #iteach #iteach3rd #iteach4th #iteach5th #stem #steam #teachersfollowteachers #algebra1 #algebra See more

My son recently had a Minecraft art birthday party via Zoom, taught by @creativecave_us, and I was so excited to see that they’d be using graph paper for their artwork! . Just posting this in hopes that it sparks creativity for either parents or teachers! . Parents, this is a good reminder of why it’s important to keep graph paper around the house! You’ll want your kids to become familiar with it in a playful way before they ever use it in a classroom. ... . Teachers, Minecraft art like this could be used for some fun area practice! . Any other ideas on how this could be used in math class or at home?? . . . #mathisfun #mathiseverywhere #mathintherealworld #mathathome #mathactivities #ilovemath #iteachmath #mathtutor #math #maths #kindergartenmath #elementarymath #teachersofinstagram #mathteacher #mathteachers #mathteachertribe #homeschool #distancelearning #igteachers #iteach #iteachk #iteach1st #iteach2nd #iteach3rd #iteach4th #iteach5th #stem #steam #teachersfollowteachers See more
