For today's #ArtWorldSpotlight, and in the spirit of the season, we're taking a closer look at how our "Jewels of the Season" Ornaments were made. There are over 1,200 ornaments in the collection, and each ornament is completely unique. Starting with a base silk-wrapped styrofoam ball, the artist then attaches beads, stones, thread, and filigree using different sized pins. There is never glue used, these ornaments are entirely crafted using pins! The artists liked to stack m...any elements together to reach the desired effects, and it took anywhere from two days to two weeks to complete a single design. A true testament to patience and nimble fingers. If you'd like to learn more about our "Jewels of the Season" ornament collection, register for our upcoming Lecture at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum on the evening of December 17th with Lynne Thompson, our ornament specialist. This #FlashBackFriday, we are reminiscing about our holiday traditions. Each December museum patrons come together for the member holiday party, celebrating the season and the arts. The galleries sparkled with the ornaments, seasonal decor, and patrons in festive finery. Here's to the warm memories that sustain us this year and the hope for a return to celebrations next year. #HappyHolidays #FBF #JewelsoftheSeason #HolidayParty2019 #FondMemories #Reminiscing #WeMissYou #Gatherings

Discover your #TimkenHoroscope... 2020 has undoubtedly demanded bravery, resourcefulness, and resilience. If you're in need of a resupply, you'll be happy to know it's officially Scorpio Season. Our Golden Age Dutch artist, Jacob van Ruisdael, was a Scorpio, too, born November 12th, 1629. His "A View of Haarlem and Bleaching Fields" shows us a scene celebrating a powerful trait of the Scorpio: The ability to stand firm through changing weather. Ruisdael was captivated by... the surrounding agricultural fields and wild dunes, located to the west of the city, and the changing weather that blew in from the North Sea. The textile industries' laborious processes of bleaching raw linen in the open air are also on display. This scene is indeed a testament to resilience and the ability to withstand the elements. We hope your Scorpio season brings you enduring strength to weather any storm. : Francisco de Zurbarán November 7th, 1598 : October 23rd - November 21st : Water : Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn, Pisces : Brave, passionate, resourceful, likes the truth, and longtime friends. #Scorpio #Bravery #DutchArt #DutchGoldenAge #Haarlem

The Timken Museum of Art owes its existence to the combined efforts and generosity of two families: the prominent Timken family from Canton, Ohio, and the Putnam sisters, Anne and Amy. Interestingly, each of the two families is famous for its revolutionary inventions. Today we'll focus on the Timken Family -- renowned for the invention of . In 1880, Henry Timken solved an enormous problem for heavy freight wagons, the inability to turn sharply. The tapered... roller bearing alleviated this issue and surprisingly created many other benefits such as: Fewer repairs and replacement costs on wagons. Fewer mules are required to pull the wagons. A reduced amount of goods lost from large loads. The Timken company is still active today and is the leading authority on tapered roller bearings. #TimkenHistory #TimkenMuseumofArt #TimkenInventions #TimkenRollerBearing #tbt #ThrowbackThursday See more

Balboa Park fountains are an integral decorative feature from grand cascading centerpieces situated prominently along the major thoroughfares to petite spouting statuaries in quaint gardens amongst the 1,200-acre park. Today we invite you to appreciate this charming sculptural fountain nestled in the Craig Noel garden in front of The Old Globe. The sculpted figures remind us of the Golden-Age Greek Theatrical masks . #BalboaPark #OldGlobe #Fountains

Our amazing mid-century modern building can be enjoyed from all four sides. Interestingly enough, every side of our building faces squarely in each cardinal direction. The entrance faces West, the sides North and South, and the rear faces East. Which is your favorite? #ModernistMonday #MuseumFromHome #NorthSouthEastWest #MidCenturyModern

Italian artist Paolo Veronese was known for his themes of religion and mythology seen here with Madonna and Child with Saint Elizabeth, the Infant Saint John the Baptist and Saint Catherine. We follow Veronese’s lead and take one of the most iconic religious symbols, the fig, to reinterpret an Italian classic for today’s Timken inspired recipe, Roasted Leek, Prosciutto and Fig Pizza. Symbology aside, the roasted leeks and figs unequivocally mimic the colors found in the figur...es' clothing. We find this culinary homage to Veronese's masterpiece quite delicious. #TimkenInspiredRecipe #TimkenKitchen #ItalianFood #Pizza #ItalianRecipes & cup warm water (between 100-110F, 38-43C) 1 1/8 t. instant yeast 1 T. sugar 2 T. plus 1 t. olive oil 1 t. salt t. onion powder 1 3/4 cups bread flour plus more for hands and surface 1 T. cornmeal 3 T.
