May in NF awareness month. It has been my resolution this year is to raise awareness for NF1. NF1 (Neurofibromatosis Type 1) is a genetic disorder that can affect multiple systems of the body, including a proneness to tumor formations and bone dysplasias. NF1 can also cause significant motor deficits such as poor coordination, low muscle tone, and easy fatiguability. My nephew Maverick (ZuZu) was diagnosed just before he turned 3 years old. Seeing another child at his appoint...ments with a tumor over her entire eye reminds us how lucky we are, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a struggle. We know the struggles: the struggles of sitting thru hours on hours of testing, the struggles of keeping glasses on a toddler, the struggles of seeing him cry and fight thru physical therapies because his baby muscles are literally exhausted, the struggle of every sickness leading into double ear infections and lasting twice as long as everyone else, the struggles of his baby anxiety (loud places, lots of people, essentially every birthday party), the struggles of developmental delays, the struggles of how a simple walk often leads to a scratched up face, the struggle of how balance is STILL an issue (walking up a single step takes so much focus and energy), the struggles of knowing every illness has to be taken more seriously, the struggles of having a tumor (benign) already, the struggles of said tumor having the possibility of latching on to organs at any time and causing fatal issues, the struggles of thinking what his future looks like and the endless worries. It’s the most devastating thing to have a nephew with special needs, but that’s exactly what he is, S P E C I A L. There is no cure for NF1, so I feel now all I can do is raise awareness! Having people know the disorder, know the struggles, and know Maverick will help drive awareness, educate those around us, and raise money to support research and the families that can’t afford the treatments they need.
