Is your horse rubbing herself raw and you're at your wits end? Check out this article from Dr. Kellon on eliminating pinworms: https://drkhorsesense.wordpress....com//how-to-get-rid-of-pi/ "...pinworms have a 5 month life cycle and the dewormers only get adults and very late stage larvae so the drugs may well be effective but they are seeing the younger larvae mature to egg laying after the drug is gone." I had an incident this past week that led me to think of the dangers we barefoot trimmers/farriers face and the lack of thought, planning and appreciation and care we often encounter. All of us in the profession have heard horror stories of barefoot trimmers/farriers being kicked or violently pushed and or trampled. It is our heads/bodies underneath a 700 - 1000 pound animal. I don't appreciate working on an animal that doesn't stand still or otherwise misbehaves because you... failed to train it. Nor do I appreciate being ridiculed for not getting the job done. If your horse doesn't stand still long enough for me to get the job done then the job doesn't get done. Its that simple. You as the owner have failed that horse. It is not our job to train your animal. Be thoughtful in your actions, loud noise, close machinery and unexpected actions can often spook horses and put us at additional risk. Appreciate us and please don't take us, our time, our commitment to your horse for granted. This is a difficult job. Most of us do it with love and passion for the horse. Please treat us with respect. See more

Back foot of a reining/cow horse transitioning to barefoot

Here I look a little more at the movement in the equine foot. I have already looked at the lower slice to this one, and posted a short video on FB. This one, ...I took a horizontal slice at the level of the navicular bone- I reckon straight through its middle! So it’s a little higher than my last slice. This view is pretty special in itself and I’ll be running a video on it soon. This video is to show how flexible and elastic the foot is at the back compared to the front, but there is a little movement in the front too. Now I realise it’s a slice and is not a true representation of the true flexibility of the foot but if we look at the slice in isolation and compare each part then we do get some meaningful info. Endocrinopathic Laminitis (which accounts for 80-90% of laminitis cases) is not inflammatory, which is why long-term use of NSAIDs (like bute) is not the best c...ourse of treatment. To learn how to best treat the most common type of laminitis, read the proceedings from Dr. Kellon's presentation ACUTE CARE FOR ENDOCRINOPATHIC LAMINITIS from the 2017 NO Laminitis! Conference.
