How do I cope with chronic homework problems? Establish a plan for improvement - 1)Establish clear expectations 2)Establish clear consequences. 3) Stay connected with your child's teacher. The earlier in your child's school years that you can implement effective homework practices, the more likely you are to shape homework as a positive learning experience. But it's never too late to start. Even if your child has reached the grumbling and complaining stage, you can still turn things around.

Dear Families, Standardized Tests Are Coming Up. Here’s how we can take some of the stress away from you and your child! Here are 9 Tips to help your child prepare for tests:... To help children prepare adequately for tests (whether teacher-made or standardized), you can do several things to provide support and create a positive test-taking experience. 1. Make sure that your child is in school during the testing sessions. Do not plan any doctor or dental appointments on test dates. 2. Make sure that you are aware of your child's performance and that you can help interpret the results when they become available. 3. Remember to keep well-informed about your child's tests. Know how test results are used, and how they will affect your child's placement in school. 4. If there are major differences between standardized test scores and school grades, find out why. 5. Encourage your child to study over a period of time rather than "cram" the night before. 6. Encourage your child to listen carefully to all test-taking directions given by the teacher and to ask questions about any directions that are unclear. 7. See that your child gets his/her regular amount of sleep before the tests and is well-rested. 8. Make sure that your child eats his/her usual breakfast on the day of the test. Hunger can detract from a good test performance. 9. Encourage your child to do his/her best. Brought to you by the American School Counselor Association

**Reasons Why All Students Can Benefit from Summer Tutoring** Summer tutoring shouldn't be reserved solely for students who had a hard time keeping up during the school year. It can actually be quite beneficial for all students no matter how well they performed in class this past year. No matter what final grades your student brought home this school year, they can always benefit from summer tutoring classes. Below are some of the ways all students can benefit from staying ac...ademically active this summer. 1) Make the Transition Back to School Easier After a long summer break without any sort of academic activities, most students will have a rough time making the transition back to school in September. Tutoring can keep your child in the habit of studying, completing assignments, and working in an academic setting. Tutoring isn't as strict as an actual school, but it can make getting back into the academic groove much easier once school is back. 2) Prevent a Summer Learning Loss Students who don't participate in academic activities over the summer are at risk of losing the knowledge they gained during the school year. By not putting these lessons to use for months, children risk academic regression, including a reduction in their reading level. To be sure they're prepared for the new lessons the upcoming school year will bring, keep their mind working over the summer with tutoring. 3) Prepare for College Exams If your child has a lot on their plate during the school year, they may not have a ton of time to dedicate to studying for college entrance exams like the SAT or ACT. Take advantage of the extra free time they have over summer and enroll them in summer tutoring that focuses on preparing for these exams. They will be better able to focus their attention on these exams, helping them achieve a better score.

In this post, The Tutoring Center in Torrance has some ways you can help address your child's stress. - Speak with Your Child's Teacher When you get a chance, speak with your child's teachers and ask about any struggles or frustrations your child has exhibited during class. If you fin...d that your child has troubles with individual areas, ask about ways you can help to build your child's self esteem to help them through. - Keep It Organized Help your child stay on track by organizing a study and school routine with them. Find out what tasks they have upcoming and assist them with planning time and resources to ensure it is completed on time. It could be that your child has a few too many projects due closely together. - Keep It Calm Don't match your child's stress levels with your own. *How to Teach Your Children About Teamwork* Teamwork is everywhere around us, from how buildings are made to the coffee that you bought this morning, and plays a large part in social and educational paths. In this post, The Tutoring Center in Torrance has a few tips to share about how you can show your child the benefits of teamwork. - Create Shared Tasks If you have more than one child, or if your child has friends over, provide them with tasks or activities that require t...wo or more people to complete. For example, if your sweets are just out of reach, show them how if one child can hold the small stool while the other reaches sweets, they can both enjoy the benefits of teamwork. Of course, once they figure this out, it's time to move those sweets! - Lead by Example The next time you need adult help in the kitchen, make sure that your child is around and watching. Showing them how it's okay to ask for help, and how that help comes in the form of teamwork to reach a goal is a great lesson for your child to not only learn, but to see in action. Remember, it's the small things that you do regularly that can have the biggest impact. - Video Games While this may seem like a strange one for an educational list, the right video games can have a great and positive learning impact on your child. Choose games that reward players for teamwork with prizes or trophies, such as completing an on-screen math puzzle or using their collective brains to solve a particularly hard part of the game. While it's not a substitute for formal tutoring in Torrance, video games can make a great learning complement.

*6 Benefits of Your Child Learning an Instrument* When you think about your child's academic career it's rare that you give much consideration to non-education based activities as on the surface they don't appear to offer much benefit to your child's brain. The Tutoring Center in Torrance has put together a list of ways that learning an instrument can help your child succeed in their academics. 1) Constantly counting bars, notes, tempo etc may seem like second nature for a ch...ild who plays an instrument, and is also second nature to children who perform well at math. Reading music constantly challenges your brain to run small calculations that keep your child's brain on focus. 2) Reading music whilst playing an instrument requires a tremendous amount of hand to eye coordination. While this may not seem academic, these base skills play a part in exercises like controlling chemical reactions in a science class. 3) Learning about a new culture is a great way to expand your knowledge, and a music instrument provides the perfect starting off point; learning about its origins, its sounds, its previous uses, etc. 4) Bands are a great way for your child to build their social skills which will help them greatly when it comes time to working in partners or groups for school projects. 5) Performing on stage is the best way to get over stage fright. If you find that your child has a hard time presenting his work in class, learning an instrument may be just the thing to help. 6) Believe it or not, teens get stressed. A great, and non electronic, way for your child to wind down or relax is by playing an instrument. This activity takes your child's mind away and allows them to refocus on study.
