Berkeley Political Poster Workshop, 1970, screenprint. These two posters were created at UC Berkeley in 1970 and donated to the Turner by Wayne Pease. Learn more about the Berkeley Political Poster Workshop and the "Social Commentary: Prints and Politics" exhibition by visiting our website (link in bio). The "Don't Mourn Organize" poster and several others included in the exhibition reference Bobby Seale's book "Seize the Time: The Story of the Black Panther Party," published from recordings given in 1968, and a second set of recordings from 1969-70 while Seale was held in San Francisco County Jail. #printoftheday #screenprinting

Fred Millar, "Cupid and my Campaspe Play'd at cards for kisses," color mezzotint. This print references the poem "Cards and Kisses" by English poet John Lyly (1553-1606): "Cupid and my Campaspe play'd... At cards for kisses-Cupid paid: He stakes his quiver, bow, and arrows, His mother's doves, and team of sparrows; Loses them too; then down he throws The coral of his lips, the rose Growing on 's cheek (but none knows how); With these, the crystal of his brow, And then the dimple of his chin: All these did my Campaspe win. At last he set her both his eyes- She won, and Cupid blind did rise. O Love! has she done this for thee? What shall, alas! become of me?" #printoftheday #valentines #mezzotint

Fritz Scholder, "Rose," 1981, color lithograph. Scholder (1937-2005) was a student of Wayne Thiebaud's at Sacramento City College. He was invited by Thiebaud (along with Peter Vandenberg and Greg Kondos) to found a cooperative gallery in Sacramento. Scholder regularly discussed how his work was influenced by Thiebaud, and it is fitting to include one of his prints from the Turner Collection as we celebrate Thiebaud's 100th birthday on November 15th. William Hogarth, "An Election Entertainment, Plate 1," from "Four Prints of an Election," 1755 reprinted 1821, engraving. #printoftheday #engraving #museumfromhome #election @chicostate @csuchicohfa This engraving was after the first of Hogarth's paintings "The Humors of an Election." According to the Royal Academy, "The Humours of an Election was inspired by the notorious Oxfordshire election of 1754, in which the Whigs decided to challenge the Tory stronghold of Oxford by c...ontesting the election, leading to a disputed result and Parliament deciding on the winner (the Whig majority in the House of Commons backing their own candidate). Hogarth depicts the four 'humours' of an election, beginning with this scene set in the private room of an inn, shows Whig election candidates gathering the support of town grandees and citizens." https://www.royalacademy.org.uk//an-election-entertainment See more
