New Abstract Paintings by Luke Chiswell The Australian artist behind Trophies continues his painting practice with Asemic writing. Asemic writing is foundational to Chiswell’s work. Text moves from legible to abstract evoking an intuitive response to mark making. In his new work his script is separated further from its meaning through cropping and scale. These methods intentionally focus the characteristically nonsensical text as the connecting and driving force a...cross the otherwise disconnected works. I’m interested in pushing language away by breaking it and using it as a starting point for a different intention, then putting it back together. - Luke Chiswell Explore these new paintings: http://bit.ly/35Fz0vL

What does capturing the essence of the individual mean in 2020, and beyond? One of the most traditional subjects in art history has been the portrait, which usually evokes the era of commissioned paintings by wealthy aristocrats in a time before modern photography, and the invention of the selfie. And though the access to seeing one’s self is no longer limited by economic means like that of centuries past, the beauty of the portrait still holds true. In a mirror (or a front-f...acing camera) we have access to how we see ourselves, but through the eyes of a painter, sculptor or photographer we are subject to how others see us.
