The San Francisco School 30.10.2020

As of this morning, Preschool to 5th Grades are being taught at 300 Gaven St. A special welcome to new students who have arrived on campus for the first time as SFS Bears! And our remote learners are in our minds and heart every moment of the school day. #sfschool

On a beautiful day in the Portola, the 6th graders had their first orientation -- in person! We are so happy that our elementary school classes will be on campus for most of our students this week, and we're looking forward to welcoming our middle school students to Gaven St. and Tunnel Ave. in November. #sfschool #middleschool #thegardendistrict

"Tomodachi means friend!" Today at recess, this adorable kindergartener shared her love of language on the sunny South Play Yard as she made a new friend (and then spun around in circles).... #sfschool #kindergarten #tomodachi

Third graders, we're so glad you're here. We are happy to welcome back students who are able to learn in person, and we can't wait until the day that all of our students can return to Gaven Street. Jenny Bernstein... #sfschool #welcome

At The San Francisco School, the teaching staff has been providing an exceptional and innovative progressive education for over 50 years. Our faculty has been the heart and soul of our school where students develop self-reliance, strong academic skills, creativity, and a sense of social justice. We are hiring for two full time substitute teacher positions for 2020-21 (with an option to work Summer Camp). 1. Early Childhood Education (ECE) working with 3 year-olds through pres...Continue reading

The timelessness of this 1st grader's photo is belied by her face mask. Even though K - 2nd grade returned to campus this week to new health and safety protocols, much of their study and play was familiar and comfortable. #sfschool #thenewnormal #welcomeback #carefulcheetahs #cleverfalcons

Today at 10:15 am, staff and students on campus dropped, covered, & held on! It was the Great Shakeout, the international effort to learn and practice what to do in an earthquake. #sfschool #greatshakeout2020 #dropcoverholdon

"Space keeps us safe!" With masks, physical distance, and individual sets of supplies, the K-2nd grade students returned to Gaven Street for a full day of school. We're so happy to have them back on campus, and we're looking forward to welcoming the rest of our elementary students over the next few weeks! #sfschool #spacekeepsussafe #welcomeback... "The SFS campus was once the home of the Ohlone. As we continue our preparations to return to campus, it is important to think of those who once lived and flourished on this land. Our students have been studying native history and heritage from the perspective of these first Americans. As always, SFS students learn through music. Elementary students dedicated this week’s singing time to Native American music and Ohlone spiritual leader Tony Cerda; the 6th-grade students are i...mmersed in South American indigenous culture, from Andean art and music to Quechua myths; the 8th-grade students appreciated the work of Supaman, an Apsáalooke rapper and fancy dancer. SFS students are thinking critically about American history. Our middle schoolers are learning about indigenous people with an emphasis on culture, community, and government/organization before Europeans arrived. In Friday’s Town Meeting the shared their journeys and research on understanding indigenous people. Next month, SFS/Celebrating Us will host guests to celebrate Latinx Heritage and Indigenous People-- Richard Quiroga, an Ohlone speaker who will share his traditions and cultural expressions, and Tacun Lazarte, a proponent of bringing Mapuche language back to the schools who will teach students about Andean instruments. Providing this programming is challenging, especially this year. But though we are in a pandemic, we cannot pause on our work of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This is simply NOT a choice for our community, and I am grateful to our teachers for continuing to teach these valuable lessons to our students." Down by the barn in the Adventure Playground, construction of the Field Station is underway! Students will soon be able to take the winding 50 ft slide down the hill through the fruit trees and flowers to the School's newest learning and activities area. It's just another way we're creating more s p a c e as we welcome our students back to campus next week. We'll keep you posted. #sfschool #adventureplayground #50ftslide #reopening

We can't wait! Just one week until the K - 2nd grade students return to 300 Gaven St.... And then the 3rd graders... And then the 4th & 5th! The health and safety of our community is paramount. Our staggered start is just one of the ways we are reopening carefully and deliberately. #sfschool #reopening

Kudos to all of the middle school students who participated in this year's virtual Student Council Election (especially our brand new sixth graders)! The race for scribe, treasurers, vice-presidents, and presidents concluded last week in the middle school's Town Meeting, and we're looking forward to a year of strong student community and leadership. #sfschool #vote

We are happy to welcome SFS parent Ali Gass and her family back to the Bay Area and our school community. As the new Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Institute of Contemporary Art of San José, she has created a polling place where citizens can cast their vote and contemplate the American identity. The gallery will feature the work of Iranian-born artist Amir H. Fallah, who says, I want them to think about what their vote means, how it affects everyone and everything around them. #sfschool #amirhfallah #GOTV2020 #humanitarianpromise
