Last year, TheraPony had to opt out of the grant part of #HelpAHorseDay contest held annually by ASPCA after the rules were changed, requiring rescues to relinq...uish ownership of adopted horses. While we’ve been going back and forth, hoping to find a way to give up ownership and still ensure protection for adopted horses, we are yet to find a solution to what seems to be a catch 22. So you can imagine my excitement this morning when I got an email with this message from ASPCA. Here are the 4 reasons given when I excitedly clicked on the link: 1. Adopted Horses Are Like Every Other Horse 2. It's What Horse Owners Expect 3. It's What We Should Expect of Adopters 4. Limits Liability Providing lifetime protection for adopted horse is not found on that list. Therein lies a problem. Rescues exist because a lot of horses find themselves in bad situations. Adopting a horse should not be just another transaction or a grab for higher numbers. Being rescued, at least here, means a lifetime commitment and responsibility to the horse. Our promise to them is that they will never need to be rescued again. It is hard, it is expensive, and by sticking to our guns on this subject, we are cutting off a major grant avenue, the one and only ASPCA, an organization that less than two years ago recognized our efforts to help horses in our community with a top grant. But committing to every horse that comes through our gates for the rest of their life is absolutely the right thing for the horses. If you, like us, believe that rescue is not just another name for horse sales but rather a point a horse’s life where someone actually takes full responsibility for what happens to the animal for the rest of their life, please consider getting involved. Volunteer, donate, sponsor, adopt. We can’t do this work without your support. paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/1223628 And if you need an example of why we take a firm stand on this issue, an example of what happens to horses when they are just passing through is in the comments.
