Oscar Bluemner Modernist pencil and crayon drawing on paper depicting the Harlem River, with bridge and boats, by German / American artist Oscar Florianus Bluemner, (1867-1938). Oscar Bluemner was an important early American modernist artist, active in New York and Massachusetts. Bluemner was a prolific artist constantly sketching and considering potential subjects, often writing on the backs and fronts of sketches, often noting the colors he saw. This work, a sketch of the H...arlem river depicting a scene with boats, bridges and what appears to be a train, was created in 1910. It is titled ‘Harlem R. (river) June 18-10’. It is a pencil and crayon drawing on paper. The paper has some wear and toning, consistent with age. Housed in a distressed vintage wood frame under non-glare UV plexiglass with an acid free mat. It measures 4.5 x 6 paper size, and 15 x 17.75 x 2 overall including mat and framing. $2000

Erle Loran Strong ab-ex painting by San Francisco Bay Area artist Erle Loran. Erle Loran, (1905-1999), was an important figure in the California artist scene, living most of his life the Bay Area Loran taught for many years at UC Berkeley and exhibited his paintings around the United States. Early in life he travelled in Europe and lived in Paul Cezanne’s studio. He would later write several books, including "Cezannes’ Composition".... Moving to California Loran became engrossed in the Bay Area art scene and was exposed to Hans Hofmann. This work shows the influences of Hofmann, while having a palette of a Clifford Still, and shows Loran’s fascination with abstract expressionism at the time when the style was just budding. Oil on canvas. Estate stamped verso. Framed in a contemporary frame. Measures 40 x 27 sight size, and 42 x 28.75 x 2 overall including a framing. Excellent condition. $5000

Lawrence Kupferman Lyrical abstract painting by American artist Lawrence Kupferman. Lawrence Edward Kupferman, (1909 1982) , lived and worked in Massachusetts. He was involved with the WPA movement there in the 1930s, and turned to abstract expressionism in the 1940s. Lawrence taught at Massachusetts College of Art from 1941-1970 and exhibited in local galleries and institutions in Boston, NewYork, Provincetown, as well as venues around the globe. Kupferman has been credite...d with bringing abstract expressionism to Boston and was instrumental in creating a thriving modern art scene in Boston, designed to revival New York City. This work is liquitex on stretched canvas. It is titled ‘ ‘Maine Coast Summer 2’, and was created in 1963. This work is signed lower right, and signed, titled, and dated verso. George Dergalis A wonderful mixed media collage and painting by Boston area artist George Dergalis. George Dergalis exhibits his influences from Italian painters with this unique work. Dergalis, who was born in Greece and fought in WWII where he was captured and spent 3 years in a Nazi Prison camp. After the war he studied art in Italy before finding his way to the United States. Settling in Boston Dergalis created abstract imagery and taught art. Framed in a period frame, and signed and dated lower right. Measures 14 x 32 x 1.75 overall including frame.

Robert Kaess Early 1950s abstract painting by California artist Robert Kaess. Robert Kaess studied at the University of California under Erle Loran, John Haley and Margaret Peterson, receiving his BFA in 1948, and his MFA in 1950. Shortly after Kaess traveled to study and paint in Europe, having a one man show in London in 1953,... In the late 1950s Kaess became allergic to paint and return to UC Berkeley to study medicine. Robert Kaess’s art career was brief, but took place in an important time in San Francisco Bay Area art history. The Modern Art Exchange is please to be able to offer for sale a small collection of the artist’s works from the early 1950s. This slightly geometric work is a watercolor and tempera on paper, and is signed lower right. It is housed in a simple, contemporary metal frame under plexiglass. Measures 14 x 21.5 sight size, and 25 x 33 x 2 overall with frame. See more
