ACTING & DIRECTING FOR SCREENWRITERS & PLAYWRIGHTS To write for film and theater ultimately involves a collaborative process between the disciplines of writing, directing, and acting. Many of our finest playwrights and screenwriters began as actors (Harold Pinter, Horton Foote, Sam Shepard, case in point). ... Understanding experientially the process of the actor dynamically informs the processes of writing and directing and will lead you to excel in both disciplines. CINDA JACKSON is an actress, Master Teacher, award-winning director, and Artistic Director of The Lost Studio in Los Angeles. She has been teaching professional actors Scene Study & Sensory Classes for 27 years. She has taught Interdisciplinary Workshops for Writers, Directors, & Actors with celebrated writers John Steppling and Donald Freed and has directed and produced the new works of many of LA's finest emerging playwrights. This workshop will deepen your understanding of how to work with actors. You will learn, through your own experience, the journey of the actor in developing a character...the actor's vocabulary, the discovery of the character's emotional & physical life and how the reality of the character's circumstances informs their behavior. In the beginning, there is the word. The writer creates the intricate blueprint, the director designs the architectural structure, and the actor breathes life into the character. Through experiencing the actor's process firsthand, you will gain a deeper understanding of sensory work, the usefulness of improvisation, the different techniques, methods, and exercises an actor uses to become the character and best serve the vision of the writer and the director. You will find these same techniques release something new in you...a new clarity and authenticity in your work. Enhanced creativity and freedom of expression. DAYTIME INTENSIVE: Scene Study and Sensory Class A rigorous workout for actors intent on taking their work to a deeper level. Scene Study Technique, voice & body work, sensory, improvisation, character development. Class Meets: 3 days per week Tuition: $600. For 8 week session ADVANCED NIGHT CLASS: Scene Study The focus of this class is on refining your acting through an in-depth exploration of one writer's body of work. Fall Session: HAROLD PINTER Class Meets: 1 night per week Tuition: $400. For 8 week session ACTING FOR WRITERS & DIRECTORS: Scene Study and Sensory Class This class provides writers & directors with the opportunity to experience, first-hand, the process of the actor. Through this experience, the understanding of the collaboration of the disciplines of writing, directing, and acting is dynamically enhanced. Class Meets: 1 night per week Tuition: $400. For 8 week session COMPANY CLASS: (invitation only) The focus is on sensitizing the actor to work as part of an ensemble in creating works of theatre. A Schedule will follow shortly. I am offering some NEW CLASSES, so please take a close look. It would be great to work with you again, and it's always good to invigorate and recharge your creative batteries! * Our June 26 REUNION/FAREWELL PARTY at the Studio was FANTASTIC! It was bittersweet to say good-bye to a space that holds the imprint and memories of so many artists. But, to see actors, writers, and directors from over 4 decades at the Studio was really wonderful! If you weren't able to be there, please know how very much we missed you...and if you didn't hear about in time, please charge it to our heads, not our hearts. * A very generous offer was made on the night of the party. If we can raise $10,000, this especially kind individual will give a matching donation! We are close, but not quite there yet, having raised $7500, as of now. Dear Friends of The Lost Studio, We could really use your help right now. My landlord of 26 years has received an offer he cannot refuse. An apparel store will pay him nearly double the rent that I pay. This is the way things are going all over LA, unfortunately. So, now this space which has enjoyed a long and significant history of interdisciplinary training, creative exploration, and performances of all genres will become another clothing store. We have to move out by J...une 30. It is very sudden, so there has not been time to adequately prepare for the expense and work that will be involved in re-locating. This is where I hope you will step in and help us. The most important thing is to raise money quickly to secure another space and do the actual move-out. Our idea is to do a grass-roots and personal fundraising effort. If each of you could reach out to 10 or 20 people you know and they would contribute $25, or $50, or more, we could have a new beginning in creating a place to continue and sustain our work. We are actively looking for a new place to move. If you know of a potential space, please forward that information. We could also use help in the actual move-out. We will give you more specific information regarding the fundraising plan and a big farewell party at the studio. Please let us know if you want to be part of the Force.
