Another blatant attempt by Instacart to hurt workers and spread fear to prevent any future organizing. We stand with Instacart workers! #SickofGigGreed "The decision to terminate the employees who unionized with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1546 in Skokie in early 2020 is part of a larger series of layoffs that Instacart announced on Tuesday. The news was buried in a blog post and the layoffs impact Instacart's in-store shoppers, who are direct employees of t...he company that pick and pack groceries at supermarkets around the country. According to the UFCW, Instacart is firing nearly 2,000 of its 10,000 grocery store workers as part of these layoffs, and offering as little as $250 as severance. The layoffs come amid Instacart's rapid expansion during the Coronavirus pandemic as millions of people have turned to on-demand grocery delivery. The company reported profitability for the first time in 2020, is preparing to IPO at some point this year, and is estimated to be valued at up to $30 billion, CNBC reported."

Our frontline workers need protections. Our port workers put themselves on the line every day and are a critical part of California's supply chain. "Nearly 700 dockworkers at the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have contracted COVID-19 and hundreds more are taking virus-related leaves, raising fears of a severe slowdown in the region’s multibillion-dollar logistics economy. A growing longshore worker infection rate, which parallels the surge of the virus across Cali...fornia, is exacerbating a massive snarl at the ports due to a pandemic-induced surge in imports of general goods. Port executives, union leaders and elected officials are mounting an urgent campaign to initiate dockworker vaccinations, fearing that a labor shortage could force terminal shutdowns. We’ve got more cargo than we do skilled labor, said Eugene Seroka, executive director of the Los Angeles port. We are told 1,800 workers are not going on the job due to COVID right now. That can [include] those who are isolating through contact tracing or awaiting test results. Or maybe [those who] fear ... going on the job when a lot of people are sick."

"Today marks a great victory that was made possible thanks to the efforts of thousands of union members across Los Angeles County. Americans have spoken loud and clear by electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as their President and Vice President. The Los Angeles Labor Movement was crucial in winning this victory to protect our democracy and heal our nation. Throughout the election cycle, The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, representing over 800,000 workers from over 3...00 affiliates, organized one of the most robust get out the vote operations in the country which was key in record level turnout by contacting tens of thousands of voters in key swing states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Arizona that were critical in determining the outcome of the 2020 Presidential election. Over one million dials were made and over a hundred thousand conversations were had by union members during this election cycle. This included a partnership with the Arizona AFL-CIO and our affiliate, UNITE HERE Local 11 where over 250,000 conversations were had with Arizona voters that were critical in delivering the state and its electoral votes to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. While we are confident in our victory, we must respect the democratic process and support the count of every vote cast in this historic election. Tonight was a victory for working families. Union members led the way to save our democracy by getting their fellow union members across the country to make their voices heard and vote for leaders that will put working families first. Our work does not end here: union members must roll up our sleeves and get to work to heal and rebuild our Nation and our unions by pursuing the common good through labor’s values of hard work, respect, dignity, and integrity." - Ron Herrera, President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor #bidenharris2020 #election2020
