Four years ago tonight we met outside what is the current location of the Dharma Bum Temple. It was at that time we decided we would do everything we could to secure the building and after 10 years downtown, give a new home to us Dharma Bums! Here we sit in crazy times, yet one thing that is constant is the heart of this community. Since October of 2016 we have wondered, who are Rosa M. Frank and S. Frank? In October 2017 we finally found out! Their names are on a plaque from 1932 on a wall of the Dharma Bum Temple outside Buddha for You. His name was Soloman Frank and he was a member of the Swedendborgian Church here in San Diego in the 1920’s, they built the church (now Dharma Bum Temple) in 1927. When his wife Rosa died, he decided to donate funds and build an additional Hall in 1932 at the Swedenbor...gian Church in memory of Rosa. This hall is now owned and operated by the Dharma Bum Temple serving as the Buddha for You Gift Shop. This past Sunday (2017), we had the honor of meeting Christopher (Doc) and Susan Benton here at the Dharma Bum Temple. Christopher came to see if the plaque (photo below) was still on the wall and of course it is. Christopher shared with us that his Great-Grandmother’s Brother was Soloman Frank. We were deeply moved by the stories he shared and the fact that we have kept this special building alive and filled with people brought tears to his eyes. We are all part of a past, one most of us know nothing about. Thank you to everyone who made sure we secured this sacred space.
