01 August 1774 British scientist Joseph Priestley discovers oxygen gas, corroborating the prior discovery of this element by German-Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele.... In the meantime, on 01 August 1774, an experiment conducted by the British clergyman Joseph Priestley focused sunlight on mercuric oxide (HgO) inside a glass tube, which liberated a gas he named "dephlogisticated air". He noted that candles burned brighter in the gas and that a mouse was more active and lived longer while breathing it. After breathing the gas himself, he wrote: "The feeling of it to my lungs was not sensibly different from that of common air, but I fancied that my breast felt peculiarly light and easy for some time afterwards." Mr. Priestley published his findings in 1775 in a paper titled "An Account of Further Discoveries in Air" which was included in the second volume of his book titled Experiments and Observations on Different Kinds of Air. Because he published his findings first, Priestley is usually given priority in the discovery. The French chemist Antoine Laurent Lavoisier later claimed to have discovered the new substance independently. Mr. Priestley visited Mr. Lavoisier in October 1774 and told him about his experiment and how he liberated the new gas. Mr. Scheele also posted a letter to Mr. Lavoisier on 30 September 1774 that described his discovery of the previously unknown substance, but Mr. Lavoisier never acknowledged receiving it (a copy of the letter was found in Mr. Scheele's belongings after his death). to learn more about Oxygen - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxygen Be Disaster Ready. 31 July is National Heatstroke Prevention Day. Heatstroke concerns rise with increasing temperatures, especially among young children and the elderly. The day brings awareness to the tragic effects... of a hot summer day. "Vehicular heatstroke" can occur when a child, elderly person, or pet is left or trapped inside a car or truck. According to the NHTSA, a car can heat up by 20 degrees in ten minutes. Even when it does not feel that hot outside, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise quickly enough to kill someone. Since 1998, 7,251 children have lost their lives in heatstroke. 17 July 1967 The photograph, taken by Rocco Morabito, this photo called The Kiss of Life shows a utility worker named J.D. Thompson giving mouth-to-mouth to co-worker Randall G. Champion... after he went unconscious following contact with a low voltage line. They had been performing routine maintenance when Mr. Champion brushed one of the low voltage lines at the very top of the utility pole. His safety harness prevented a fall, and Mr. Thompson, who had been ascending below him, quickly reached him and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. He was unable to perform CPR given the circumstances, but continued breathing into Champion’s lungs until he felt a slight pulse, then unbuckled his harness and descended with him on his shoulder. Mr. Thompson and another worker administered CPR on the ground, and Champion was moderately revived by the time paramedics arrived, eventually making a full recovery. Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation is circulating oxygenated blood throughout the body to keep the vital organs alive. Without the oxygen, cells will die. CPR is a combination of Rescue Breaths and Compressions. Both are important. Be Disaster Ready. Have a Plan. Happy Birthday, Dr. Hamburger Born on 15 July 1909 in Paris, France Died on 01 February 1992 (age 82)... in Paris, France Jean Hamburger was a French physician, surgeon and essayist. Dr. Hamburger was born to a Jewish family in Paris. Together with René Kuss, he defined the precise methods and rules for conducting renal transplantation surgery, and is attributed with founding the medical discipline of nephrology. In 1952, at Necker Hospital in Paris, he performed the first successful renal transplant surgery in France, on a 16-year-old carpenter, Marius Renard, who damaged his only kidney when he fell off scaffolding, using a kidney donated by the subject's mother. The organ failed, but rejection was staved off for three weeks, a record at the time. In 1955, he created the very first articifial kidney. Dr. Hamburger is credited with major breakthroughs in renal transplants: first prolonged success in 1953, first unqualified success between twins in 1959 and non-twins in 1962. He also authored basic research on the immunological basis of kidney disease, graft immunology and auto-immune diseases. If you have not yet done so, please consider becoming an Organ, Tissue, and Eye donor. 15 July is National Pet Fire Safety Day. "Not many pet owners realize that their pet can actually be the cause of a devastating fire," said AKC spokesman Lisa Peterson.... "Simple preventative measures, such as flameless candles and stove knob covers, can mean the difference between life and death for your four-legged friends." "Planning for unexpected emergencies like home fires and taking these precautions are an integral part of responsible pet ownership," Miss Peterson said. An estimated 500,000 pets are affected annually by home fires, however, nearly 1,000 house fires each year are accidentally started by the homeowners’ pets, according to a new data analysis by the National Fire Protection Association. The American Kennel Club (AKC) and ADT Security Services have joined forces once again for the annual National Pet Fire Safety Day (July 15) to spread awareness about how pets can start home fires but more importantly how to prevent them. The following article was written in 2010, but the information is still elevant. https://www.akc.org//national-pet-fire-safety-day-preven/ Schedule your Pet CPR and First Aid Class today. The study, published Monday in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, indicated that the powerful shaking in Ridgrecrest in July of last year could increase the chance of a 7.5-magnitude or greater temblor on the Garlock fault to 2.3%, or 100 times more likely than previously estimated at .023%....
