We invite you to place hands on the land together with us this Tuesday, helping prep our pumpkin patch for its grand opening on Friday. We will be there from 3pm to 6pm. You don’t need to stay the whole time, but please arrive no later than 3pm so we can walk to the patch together. It’s on a different part of the farm that requires guidance to reach, and there won’t be anyone to greet you and walk you there after 3pm (we’ll be at the patch by then, of course!). Hope to see yo...ur beautifully masked faces there. It will be a great opportunity to learn more about our till/no-till experiment with the @rodaleinstitute as well as Mesoamerican philosophies on life and death, Indigenous food ways, and the intimate link between capitalism and the current climate emergency. One year ago tonight we were holding our annual Feast in the Field. This year because we can’t meet in person we are instead selling Solidarity Shares which translate into 6 discounted weekly CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) boxes of fresh, organic, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables for farmworkers who cannot otherwise afford the produce they pick and pack. Last week Interim Executive Director Reyna Ortega spoke to a classroom last week about her experience as a farmworker for 10 years in the system of conventional agriculture in Ventura County. You can watch the video below. Here are some highlights: Industrial agriculture is a system of labor in which one works all day for low pay and poor treatment and there is not much dignity. My story is just one story among thousands and while the body is in pain, the heart is even more... in pain. The Abundant Table seeks to embody an alternative to this system which values farmworkers and the earth. When you work in agriculture, you need to learn how you will be able to relate to all life around you. Reyna describes how an organic approach to pest control seeks to center life of all kinds.
