In 1826, a Scottish golf club maker named Robert Forgan began using hickory to manufacture his shafts. This hickory was imported from America and soon caught on with others (perhaps because it was so inexpensive). Hickory wood was soon adopted as the wood of choice by golf club makers of the time.
Golf clubs referred to as Irons have a flat, angled head and are used for any number of shots on the course. Traditionally these heads were in fact made of iron, but modern club heads typically use a steel alloy.
Golf bags have even led with the game. Modern bags are made of lightweight but durable fabrics that stand up to tough wear. Golf bags can have numerous pockets for carrying balls, tees, shoes, and other equipment.
Early golf club heads were made from sturdy woods like holly, beech, or pear wood. Golf shafts were made using ash or hazel. The golf head was then connected to the shaft using a splint, which was then bound tight and reinforced with leather straps.
