Fellow Cougars, Out of caution regarding the COVID-19 outbreak, the Cougar Athletic Club and Cocina Del Charro has cancelled our previously planned April 11th breakfast meeting. Our speaker was going to be Dr. Ray Ashley, President and CEO of the San Diego Maritime Museum, and he will hopefully be rescheduled for our Fall meeting. For our July 11th Cougar Athletic Club breakfast meeting, the Cougar Athletic Club has invited Coach John Kentera, the midday host for San Diego... Sports station 97.3 The Fan (KWFN-FM). Fellow Cougars, Our featured speaker for the next Cougar Athletic Club breakfast meeting is Dr. Ray Ashley, President and CEO of the San Diego Maritime Museum. Ray, a local, became director of the Maritime Museum in 1995. He holds degrees from UCSD (BA), East Carolina University (MA), and Duke University (PhD). Ray is a licensed captain for sail, steam and auxiliary vessels of 200 tons registry and is the navigator for the Star of India and is the relief captain for the othe...r vessels of the Museum’s active fleet including the State tallship Californian, steam yacht Medea, Swift Boat PCF 816, Pilot and most recently, the galleon San Salvador. Dr. Ashley has been sailing for most of his life and has sailed tens of thousands of miles. He built, restored, renovated and preserved ships for many years before he came to the Maritime Museum. He lives in Chula Vista with his wife Carlynn (with whom he once sailed a 25’ boat through the South Pacific). Come hear the many sea stories that Ray will tell and renew old friendships with the members of the club. Today the Cougar Athletic Club heard from Mark Walker, Co-founder of the Acumen Performance Group (APG) and former Navy Seal. Mark spoke of his personal history mentioning his college days, service in the Navy and starting a family. Went on to describe how APG helps their clients, ranging from premier professional sports organizations to small businesses, by having them incorporate a "Seal's" perspective on mental toughness, goal setting, processes, contingencies, teamwork, accountability & leadership. Fellow Cougars, We have some good news and some bad news. First for the bad news: Denise White of EAG Sports unfortunately had to cancel her planned visit to our next quarterly breakfast this Saturday. We hope to reschedule her in the near future. Now the good news: John Maffei, Sports Writer for the San Diego Union Tribune, has agreed to be our guest speaker this Saturday and is prepared to give us an update on the San Diego area sports portfolio from the preps to the pros.... John was a 1971 graduate of San Diego State and lettered in baseball for the Aztecs. His first job as a sportswriter was at Escondido's Times-Advocate. He returned to San Diego State as their Sports Information Director in 1972. He returned to the Times-Advocate as sports editor in 1978. He moved to Oceanside's Blade-Tribune as a sportswriter in 1985, then was part of the North County Times when the Times-Advocate and Blade-Tribune merged. He joined The San Diego Union-Tribune staff in 2012. The breakfast is this Saturday, October 12th, at the Cocina Del Charro in Escondido. The buffet is $14 and starts at 8:30 AM. Fellow Cougars, Last Friday night at Escondido High School, the 1969 EHS Football team celebrated the 50th Anniversary of their memorable CIF Championship season. Former players, coaches and cheerleaders came from near and far to renew old friendships and recall good times. Pictured below are the players and cheerleaders around legendary Coach Robert "Chick" Embrey. They also enjoyed watching the 2019 Cougars defeat the Orange Glen Patriots by the score of 49 to 29. The Couga...r Athletic Club was able to help host this event, in part, because of contributions from club members and supporters. Fellow Cougars, A little nostalgia with this EHS Cougar Roster from the "Grid" program for their 1969 Semi-Final Game vs the Castle Park Trojans played at SDSU's Aztec Bowl. Many players & coaches from that team 50 years ago will be recognized tonight at half-time of the EHS vs OG Game at EHS's Wilson Stadium. Kick-off at 7:00 PM. Loyal, Strong and True!

Fellow Cougars, Please remember to come out and support our EHS Cougars vs their cross-town rivals, the Orange Glen High Patriots, this Friday night, August 30th, at Escondido High's Bob Wilson Stadium at Chick Embrey Field. Fellow Cougars, The Escondido High Athletic Department will be honoring the 1969 Cougar Football Team on the 50th Anniversary of their SDCIF Co-Championship season. Former players and coaches will be recognized during a halftime ceremony of the Escondido vs Orange Glen Varsity Football game set for Friday, August 30th at EHS's Wilson Stadium at Chick Embrey Field. Fellow Cougars, As you have seen from our recent posts, the Cougar Athletic Club provides scholarships to deserving Escondido High School Seniors every year. We are only able to do this because of your contributions to the Club. So please consider participating in or donating to this year's annual Fall Golf Tournament and Fund Raiser. The eventwill be held at the Reidy Creek Golf Course in Escondido on Saturday morning, September 14th, 2019. ... The cost is $75 per person or $300 a Foursome with a $5 discount per person if you register before August 15th. After the tournament, a delicious BBQ lunch is provided.
