Many of you have been asking me about CALM’s Family to Family program. Yes we are still doing it, it just looks a lot different this yea...r due to COVID and social distancing guidelines. This year more than ever, we have families struggling this holiday season. PM me if you would like to help by donating a gift card or if I can answer any questions for you. You can also email directly, our North County Family to Family coordinator, Shannon Elliott at [email protected] CALM will be collecting gift cards to distribute to families to help fulfill their holiday wishes. Gift cards will be collected until December 5 and can be mailed to the office or donations can be made at the website http://calm4kids.org/participate/family-to-family/. ThankYou

Through deep, prayerful consideration, it has been decided that The Children’s House Montessori School will not reopen the in-person preschool program this school year. Essentially the program will be on hiatus. This year’s 38th consecutive first day of school looked dramatically different from every other year--only 5 children came to campus. The impact of the current pandemic has been incredibly multi-faceted. Despite what seemed to be insurmountable obstacles, our tea...m was still able to craft ways to serve a small number of elementary children on campus, plus a small group of preschool children, virtually. These services will continue, with proper staffing and the required number of enrolled students. I am so incredibly grateful for all families and children who have attended The Children’s House Montessori School, as well as students and families I had the privilege of working with through Family Partnership Charter School. The connections we have made stretch throughout our town, across our state, into other parts of the US, and even around the world. We are an intertwined community of parents, staff, children, and grandchildren, with a unity developed through The Children’s House. All of this is worth celebrating!! It is our hope each child and every family who passed through our doors knows they carry a piece of our heart! We invite you to celebrate with us, as The Children's House has much to celebrate with you! Drive-through, Sunday, November 15, 1-3pm Wave to honor our teachers!! Collect a souvenir card Any questions you have, contact Ms Robin through an individual message at [email protected]

/ MANNERS/ Being considerate of others will take your children further in life than any college degree. This quote, often attributed to children’s rights ...activist Marian Wright Edelman. That is the secret. We teach our children manners in the million moments we have with them. The episodes often come up without warning and can catch us off guard. Parents are the most potent teachers of social norms. What we show our children, they will do. Even so, for our lessons to adhere, we must be consistent and positive. And most important, we must model the behavior we want to instill in our children. Our children adore us. They love us with their entire being. Whatever we do, they want to do. They want to be close to us; they want to watch us, hear us, learn from us, and be loved by us. So instilling manners, aka social competence, is simple and natural in these early years, from the age of 3 or 4 on. Now is the time. Young children want to know actually, crave knowing the right thing to do. Their bodies and minds have grown beyond the toddler stage. Now that they are sturdy on their feet and language can be employed in meaningful communication, they are ready for the next phase of self-construction: socialization. They encounter the world as if asking, What am I to do here? And would someone please show me how? " BY DONOHUE SHORTRIDGE Stay close to your children See more

I Spy Box A really simple one to set up if you have a transparent plastic box and some whiteboard pens. A great activity to help your child identify initial ...sounds, recognise and form letters but easily adapted to suit the phase your child is working by altering the items inside. I just placed a few items from around the house inside the upturned plastic box, put out a couple of whiteboard pens and some letter cards to help with identification and formation. Your child looks inside the box, chooses an object that they can see and listens for the initial sound. They can then practise writing the letter on the outside of the box with the whiteboard pens. For children working in the higher phases place objects inside the box that are decodable for the phase they are working and they can write the whole word on the box.

Just a few of the many words of wisdom from Dr. Montessori: If teaching is to be effective with young children, it must assist them to advance on the way to in...dependence. It must initiate them into those kinds of activities which they can perform themselves and which keep them from being a burden to others because of their inabilities. We must help them to learn how to walk without assistance, to run, to go up and down stairs, to pick up fallen objects, to dress and undress, to wash themselves, to express their needs in a way that is clearly understood, and to attempt to satisfy their desires through their own efforts. All this is part of an education for independence. Here's a little song that I wrote that I'll be sharing with the children in September. By singing, telling stories, and playing games, we can make this experien...ce of COVID-19, and all that goes along with it, a little more normal for the children. Even with my mask on, I'm still me! Even with my mask on, I'm still me! Even with my mask on, hope you see That even with my mask on, I'm still me! Even with my face shield, I'm still me! Even with my face shield, I'm still me! Even with my face shield, hope you see That even with my face shield, I'm still me! (c) Montessori Assistant, 2020

To mark 150 years since the birth of Maria Montessori, we have collaborated with BrightVibes who have made this wonderful film about Maria Montessori and her in...spirational life. We would like to thank Carolina Montessori for giving her time to talk about her great grandmother. #Montessori150
