This is Alexei Romanoff. Alexei is one of the most amazing, passionate, energetic men you could ever hope to meet. Alexei helped organize the historic protest that took place outside The Black Cat on Feb. 11, 1967. Thank you Alexei for stopping by this past week and speaking to our Black Cat family on The Black Cat’s history and the importance of keeping this story alive. New Years Eve 1967, at the stroke of midnight men began exchanging celebratory kisses & embraces. Little did they know undercover policemen had infiltrated their gathering; nightsticks came out & the beatings began resulting in 14 men arrested & charged with lewd conduct for same sex kissing. This was the norm in 1967 LA. What was about to take place would be different... (part 1 of 6) @mayorofla @mitchofarrell @laconservancy #lgbt #lgbtqpride #pride #silverlake #sunsetjunction

One year ago today we celebrated the 50-year anniversary of this peaceful demonstration. In a sign of how far things have come, we had in attendance members of @lapdhq our Councilman @mitchofarrel our Mayor @mayorofla & many representatives from @lgbtq We, as a people, have come along way in the last 51 years, BUT still have such a long way to go! Thank you Alexei Romanoff & David Farah for sharing so much of yourselves with us. Thank you @danielhenningla for organizing & Thank you Laura Dominguez @kcet @bransonpottshailey @latimes @laconservancy for sharing this story. (6 of 6) #blackcat67 #silverlake #sunsetjunction
Six of the 14 men arrested during the raid for exchanging New Year’s kisses were convicted of lewd conduct and were liable under California Penal Code Section 647 to register as sex offenders for the rest of their lives. Two were ultimately required under state law to register. Both men appealed their convictions in federal court, ultimately petitioning the Supreme Court, which declined to consider their cases. In a departure from previous cases, their attorney, Herbert E. Se...lwyn, did not deny or cover up the sexual orientation of his clients, but instead claimed their right to equal treatment under the law and in the context of the larger civil rights movement of the 1960s. It was the first time in U.S. history that gay men asserted their equal protection rights under the 14th Amendment a legal argument that courts would only accept decades later. The Free Press were the only ones that covered our demonstration. None of the regular media were here. That was one of the fears we had, that if the regular media were here and took pictures, that we would lose our jobs, we would lose our homes, and we’d be alienated by our families if we appeared in print. -Alexei @onearchives #blackcat67 #lgbtq #silverlake #sunsetjunction
In those pre-cell phone and internet days, the demonstration was organized with phone trees you called 10 people, they called 10 more people and so on. Flyers were also distributed to spread the word. This is one of them. We were so very careful when handing out these flyers; if someone dropped one we would run to pick it up we didn’t want to be arrested for littering. -Alexei Romanoff #blackcat67 #lgbtq #onearchives #silverlake #sunsetjunction
